Article Abstract

The importance of lipids seen in studies of metabolism, cancer, the recent COVID-19 pandemic and other diseases has brought the field of lipidomics to the forefront of clinical research. Quantitative and comprehensive analysis is required to understand biological interactions among lipid species. However, lipidomic analysis is often challenging due to the various compositional structures, diverse physicochemical properties, and wide dynamic range of concentrations of lipids in biological systems. To study the comprehensive lipidome, a hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HILIC-MS/MS)-based screening method with 1200 lipid features across 19 (sub)classes, including both nonpolar and polar lipids, has been developed. HILIC-MS/MS was selected due to its class separation property and fatty acyl chain level information. 3D models of class chromatographic retention behavior were established and evaluations of cross-class and within-class interferences were performed to avoid over-reporting these features. This targeted HILIC-MS/MS method was fully validated, with acceptable analytical parameters in terms of linearity, precision, reproducibility, and recovery. The accurate quantitation of 608 lipid species in the SRM 1950 NIST plasma was achieved using multi-internal standards per class and post-hoc correction, extending current databases by providing lipid concentrations resolved at fatty acyl chain level. The overall correlation coefficients (R) of measured concentrations with values from literature range from 0.64 to 0.84. The applicability of the developed targeted lipidomics method was demonstrated by discovering 520 differential lipid features related to COVID-19 severity. This high coverage and targeted approach will aid in future investigations of the lipidome in various disease contexts.

Impact of wettability heterogeneity on methane hydrate growth kinetics in partially water-saturated sediments.

Hypothesis: Gas hydrate formation in sediments is influenced by the availability of gas-water interfacial areas, which governs gas-water interactions. The surface wettability of sediment particles is expected to affect the spatial distribution of water within the pore space, thereby altering the extent of gas-liquid contact. Consequently, by tuning the wettability heterogeneity of the sediment, the spatial distribution of pore water can be regulated, which in turn influences the gas-water interactions and the kinetics of gas hydrate formation.

Purpose: To evaluate tilt, decentration, and axial stability of the Clareon toric intraocular lens (TIOL) (CNW0T3-9; Alcon Laboratories, Inc) over a 6-month follow-up period.

Methods: A single-center, prospective, interventional clinical trial was conducted with a study population of 130 eyes from 82 patients who received a Clareon TIOL. Tilt, decentration, and the aqueous depth were determined preoperatively and at 1 week and 6 months postoperatively using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (Casia 2; Tomey Corporation).

Antibacterial photodynamic therapy offers a promising approach for combating both susceptible and multidrug-resistant pathogens. However, conventional photosensitizers have limitations in terms of poor binding specificity and weak penetration for pathogens. In this study, we developed synergistic photobactericidal polymers that integrate hydrophilic toluidine blue O (TBO) with the lipophilic penetration enhancer citronellol (CT).

For recovering whey soybean protein (WSP) from soybean whey wastewater (SWW) in food industry, a foam separation method for separating WSP by using temperature-responsive Janus sheets (MF-JNSs-PN) as foam stabilizer was established. MF-JNSs-PN was prepared by grafting the temperature-responsive polymer PNIPAM onto one side of the sheet inorganic material using BSA@Cu(PO)-MF as the template. MF-JNSs-PN has a good ability to stabilize the foam due to inducing the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity transition by adjusting the temperature.

Egg white peptides (EWPs) face significant flavor challenges due to bitterness, limiting their high-value applications. This study prepared egg white glycopeptides (EWGP) through transglutaminase-catalyzed glycosylation to investigate their flavor enhancement effect. Egg white protein was hydrolyzed by neutral protease and covalently bound to glucosamine under the mediation of transglutaminase to obtain EWGP.
