Objective: To use structural equation modeling to test research- and theory-informed models of potential predictors and outcomes of subjective experiences of employment and mobility participation in a national sample of people with physical disabilities.
Design: Cross-sectional survey.
Setting: Canada.
Participants: English or French-speaking adults with a physical impairment affecting mobility and restricting activities or participation, and who participated in employment (n=457) or mobility (n=711) life domains.
Interventions: N/A.
Main Outcome Measures: Participants completed standardized measures of perceived health, and employment-specific and/or mobility-specific measures of perceived abilities, social support, accessibility and policies (predictor variables); the Measure of Experiential Aspects of Participation (MeEAP) in employment and/or mobility; and standardized measures of emotional well-being, social well-being and life satisfaction (outcome variables).
Results: Analyses using structural equation modeling showed that in both employment and mobility domains, perceived health, abilities, social support, and accessibility were positively related to experiential aspects of participation. Participation experiences were positively related to social well-being, emotional well-being, and life satisfaction.
Conclusions: Results support and extend current theorizing on participation experiences among adults with physical disabilities. Intrapersonal and environmental factors may play a role in optimizing participation experiences in employment and mobility which, in turn, may lead to better well-being and life satisfaction. These results emphasize the importance of conceptualizing participation from an experiential perspective and provide a basis for advancing theory and practice to understand and improve the participation experiences and well-being of adults living with physical disabilities.

Colloidal Lignin Particles (CLPs), with their polyphenolic structure, are promising sustainable alternatives to chemical UV filters. This study investigates the photochemical behavior of CLPs under ultraviolet irradiation synthetized from five different technical raw lignins (Alkali, Organosolv, two Enzymatic Hydrolyzed and Softwood Kraft Lignin) via solvent-shift procedure. The suspensions were irradiated using a self-developed UV-pen set-up and a commercially available UV chamber, enabling controlled UV exposure over time.

The application of artificial intelligence techniques is becoming increasingly valuable for several areas of knowledge, allowing to extract information, predict patterns, work with complex problems, and generate solutions that would not be achievable by other techniques without an extremely high computational cost or else, numerous physical experiments, with high execution costs and which often do not achieve the desired result. In this work, artificial intelligence (AI) was used to create mathematical models for four properties of friction material composites from an extensive database containing the chemical composition and the respective mechanical properties. An algorithm capable of predicting mechanical results of friction materials based on chemical composition, optimizing an existing composition, and proposing new (previously non-existent) compositions was proposed based on the desired values of each mechanical property.

Mining areas are highly susceptible to environmental contamination due to the accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), necessitating regular monitoring to assess environmental risks. In this study, soil samples were collected from two depths (0-15 cm and 15-30 cm) at 74 stations, along with deep waste samples (0-12 m) from three adjacent tailings ponds in the Mazarrón mining area, Spain. Soil/waste physicochemical properties and the Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb concentrations of total, water-soluble, and bioavailable fractions were analyzed.

Background: There is an ongoing need to develop diverse career paths that support the vital contributions of staff scientists, research engineers, scientific officers, and other knowledge professionals in scientific discovery. Research infrastructures and core facilities have a particular need to support sustainable and diverse careers, as they either employ - if being a legal entity - or daily manage research professionals in a broad variety of roles to enable resources, services, and innovation.
Methods: In 2019, a survey of the facility staff at SciLifeLab, a large national research infrastructure in Sweden, led to a recommendation for universities to develop career paths for their staff scientists.
