This special issue (SI) entitled 'Smart and intelligent optical materials for sensing applications', published by Luminescence, Wiley focuses on the recent advancement of smart and intelligent optical materials for the fabrication of sensor technology for use in numerous fields such as pharmaceutical, biomedical, and environmental. Also, detailed highlights of their prospects in the fields, for example, of personalized health care, wearable devices, and plant stress monitoring are given. This SI includes 46 peer-reviewed articles, of which 15 are reviews written by well established researchers with expertise in the field, and the remaining 31 are research articles from world-leading scientists.

The separation and propagation of spin are vital to understanding spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in quantum systems. Exciton-polaritons, hybrid light-matter quasiparticles, offer a promising platform for investigating SOC in quantum fluids. By utilization of the optical anisotropy of materials, Rashba-Dresselhaus SOC (RDSOC) can be generated, enabling robust polariton spin transport.

Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) are an important resource for identifying novel therapeutic targets and cardioprotective drugs. However, a key limitation of iPSC-CMs is their immature, fetal-like phenotype. Cultivation of iPSC-CMs in lipid-supplemented maturation media (MM) enhances the structural, metabolic and electrophysiological properties of iPSC-CMs.

Metasurfaces provide an ideal platform for optical sensing because they produce strong light-field confinement and enhancement over extended regions that allow us to identify deep-subwavelength layers of organic and inorganic molecules. However, the requirement of using external light sources involves bulky equipment that hinders point-of-care applications. Here we introduce a plasmonic sensor with an embedded source of light provided by quantum tunnel junctions.
