Current nucleic acid (NA) diagnostics are hindered in resource-limited settings by equipment needs and high costs. S(PAA-SiO) is developed, a hydrogel-SiO composite deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) separator addressing these challenges through rapid (<10 min), simple, and skill-free preparation, ultralow cost ($0.028 per unit), and equipment-minimized mass production capacity (96 units per batch).

When it comes to deep learning for protein engineering, there is strength in simplicity. In this issue of Cell, through thoughtful deployment of existing fixed-backbone sequence design models, Caixia Gao and colleagues engineer diverse genome editing systems with improved functionality, enabling powerful capabilities in fine-grained and large-scale genome editing as demonstrated through strong experimental validation.

This study investigated the application of Large Language Models (LLMs) for simplifying biomedical texts to enhance health literacy. Using a public dataset, which included plain language adaptations of biomedical abstracts, we developed and evaluated several approaches, specifically a baseline approach using a prompt template, a two AI agent approach, and a fine-tuning approach. We selected OpenAI gpt-4o and gpt-4o mini models as baselines for further research.

Baseline correction is a critical preprocessing step in Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy analysis. The adaptive iterative reweighted penalized least-squares (airPLS) method is widely used due to its simplicity and efficiency, but its effectiveness is often hindered by challenges such as baseline smoothness, parameter sensitivity, and inconsistent performance under complex spectral conditions. To address these limitations, we developed an optimized airPLS algorithm (OP-airPLS) that systematically fine-tunes key parameters by using an adaptive grid search method.

The semi-hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes, especially acetylene to ethylene, is an essential transformation that delivers raw materials and scaffolds for synthetic industries. Electrocatalytic hydrogenation, which is green and mild, provides an alternative strategy to the conventional hydrogenation process, which relies on high temperature, high pressure and flammable H. This protocol describes an electrocatalytic semi-hydrogenation method to synthesize olefins with water as the hydrogen source under ambient temperature and pressure.
