Article Abstract

Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy has been widely demonstrated for detecting chiral molecules. However, the determination of chiral mixtures with various concentrations and enantiomeric ratios can be a challenging task. To solve this problem, we report an enhanced vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) sensing platform based on plasmonic chiral metamaterials, which presents a 6-magnitude signal enhancement with a selectivity of chiral molecules. Guided by coupled-mode theory, we leverage both in-plane and out-of-plane symmetry-breaking structures for chiral metamaterial design enabled by a two-step lithography process, which increases the near-field coupling strengths and varies the ratio between absorption and radiation loss, resulting in improved chiral light-matter interaction and enhanced molecular VCD signals. Besides, we demonstrate the thin-film sensing process of BSA and β-lactoglobulin proteins, which contain secondary structures α-helix and β-sheet and achieve a limit of detection down to zeptomole level. Furthermore, we also, for the first time, explore the potential of enhanced VCD spectroscopy by demonstrating a selective sensing process of chiral mixtures, where the mixing ratio can be successfully differentiated with our proposed chiral metamaterials. Our findings improve the sensing signal of molecules and expand the extractable information, paving the way toward label-free, compact, small-volume chiral molecule detection for stereochemical and clinical diagnosis applications.

Chiral vortex beams with tunable topological charges (TCs) hold promise for high-capacity and multi-channel information transmission. However, asymmetric vortex transport, a crucial feature for enhancing robustness and security, often disrupts channel independence by altering TCs, causing signal distortion. Here, we exploit the radial mode degree of freedom in chiral space to achieve extremely asymmetric transmission with high energy contrast, while preserving chirality and TCs.

Recent advances in chiral nanoparticle superstructures with long-range order.

Chem Commun (Camb)

August 2025

Key Laboratory of Colloid and Interface Chemistry, Ministry of Education, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shandong University, Jinan 250100, P. R. China.

Long-range ordered chiral nanoparticle superstructures, formed colloidal self-assembly, exhibit geometrically asymetric structures-such as helices, twisted arrangements, or lattices with low-symmetry space groups-endowed with distinctive chiroptical properties. This review highlights that spherical inorganic nanoparticles typically require chiral templates (, supramolecular polymers, DNA, proteins or liquid crystals) to induce asymmetric spatial organization. In contrast, anisotropic inorganic nanoparticles (, nanorods, tetrahedra, or nanodumbbells) can achieve chiral assembly both with and without templates, the latter driven by interfacial directional forces or geometric curvature matching.

Colloidal Nanoparticle Metasurfaces: Principles, Fabrication, and Applications.

ACS Nano

September 2025

State Key Laboratory of Molecular Engineering of Polymers, Department of Macromolecular Science, Fudan University, Shanghai 200438, China.

Metasurfaces, a class of two-dimensional metamaterials, exhibit notable optical properties, making them attractive candidates for applications in fields such as the cloaking, biophotonics, and imaging. The realization of these applications is dependent on advancements in fabrication techniques. Conventional "top-down" lithography often faces limitations, such as polycrystallinity and surface roughness.

Mechanical extremal materials, a class of metamaterials that exist at the bounds of elastic theory, possess the extraordinary capability to engineer any desired elastic behavior by harnessing mechanical zero modes - deformation modes that demand minimal or, ideally, no elastic energy. However, the potential for arbitrary construction and reprogramming of metamaterials remains largely unrealized, primarily due to significant challenges in qualitatively transforming zero modes within the confines of existing metamaterial design frameworks. This work presents a method for explicitly defining and in situ reprogramming zero modes of 2D extremal materials by employing straight-line mechanisms (SLMs) and planar symmetry, which prescribe and coordinate the zero modes, respectively.

As a hallmark of the quantum Hall effect, chiral edge modes (CEMs) counterpropagate along the two parallel edges of a ribbon structure. However, recent studies demonstrate counterintuitive anti-CEMs that copropagate along the parallel edges. Analogous to the established extension of the CEMs to helical edge modes (HEMs) in the quantum spin Hall effect, it is natural to extend the anti-CEMs to anti-HEMs, which comprise a pair of time-reversal-related anti-CEMs.
