Article Abstract

Wheelchair ergometers are widely used in research, clinical practice, and sports environments. The majority of wheelchair ergometers are roller systems that allow for wheelchair propulsion in the personal wheelchair on one or two (instrumented) rollers. Oftentimes these systems are only statically calibrated. However, wheelchair propulsion is dynamic by nature, requiring a dynamic validation process. The aim of the current project was to present a low-cost portable system for the dynamic metrological verification of wheelchair roller ergometers, based on an instrumented reference wheel. The tangential force on the roller is determined, along with its uncertainty, from the reference wheel properties, and compared with the force measured by the ergometer. Uncertainty of this reference wheel system was found to be lower than the one of the ergometer used, indicating that this novel approach can be used for the metrological verification of ergometers.

With the advancement of modern technologies, the digitization of metering data has significantly improved the efficiency and accuracy of data collection, analysis, and management. However, the growing prevalence of data tampering techniques has raised serious concerns regarding the trustworthiness and integrity of such data. To address this challenge, this study proposes an improved SM2 digital signature algorithm enhanced with high-precision time information to strengthen the reliability of metering data.

Introduction: Optimization and quality control of the diagnostic and interventional radiology procedures is usually performed with an X-ray multimeter (XMM) based on the non-invasive measurements of different X-ray tube and output parameters obtained from the X-ray beam, such as air kerma, tube voltage and half-value layer. Standardization and metrological support need to be improved, and harmonized calibration procedures are not available for all quantities. There is also a lack of data on performance of XMMs in different measurement conditions relevant for clinical practice.

Traditional magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) often suffer from limited modulus tunability and insufficient energy dissipation, which restrict their applications. This study prepared a novel composite material by an MR gel (MRG) embedded within the MRE, called the MRE encapsulating MRG, to synergistically enhance these properties. Annular and radial MRE encapsulating MRG configurations were fabricated using 3D-printed molds, and their dynamic mechanical performance was characterized under varying magnetic fields (0-1 T) via a rheometer.

Exploring commutable materials for serum folate measurement: challenges in cross-method harmonization.

Clin Chem Lab Med

June 2025

National Center for Clinical Laboratories, Institute of Geriatric Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing Hospital/National Center of Gerontology, Beijing, P.R. China.

Objectives: Commutability is a critical attribute for reference materials (RMs) employed in standardization and calibration activities, it ensures the accuracy and equivalence of analytical results across heterogeneous measurement systems and laboratories. In the context of folate quantification, commutability holds particular significance, as it validates that RMs exhibit analytical behavior equivalent to native clinical specimens when subjected to diverse folate detection platforms. This study aims to identify and characterize commutable candidate RMs for serum folate assays, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the harmonization and metrological traceability of folate measurements in clinical diagnostics.

The noticeable growth of road transport means that the protection of road infrastructure is becoming a critical issue. The main factor leading to the excessive degradation of roads are overloaded vehicles. The effective elimination of such vehicles from road traffic is possible through widespread usage of Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) systems for direct mass enforcement, thus eliminating the need for "manual" vehicle checks which are currently carried out by the appropriate services.
