Recent strides toward improving diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in field biology present a unique opportunity for transdisciplinary exploration of the impacts and state of a topic that has remained hereto largely underexplored and under-discussed in the academic setting. Within current literature, themes of racial and gender inequity, power imbalances, unsafe environments, and underdeveloped infrastructure and resources are widespread. Thus, we organized a symposium that addressed these compelling issues in field biology DEI through a multitude of experiential and academic lenses. This article will orient the reader to the special issue and offer summative goals and outcomes of the symposium that can provide tangible steps toward creating meaningful improvements in the state of DEI and safety in field settings.

Infrastructure shapes societies and scientific discovery. Traditional scientific infrastructure, often static and fragmented, leads to issues like data silos, lack of interoperability and reproducibility, and unsustainable short-lived solutions. Our current technical inability and social reticence to connect and coordinate scientific research and engineering leads to inefficiencies and impedes progress.

Background: African American men are at a higher risk for serious health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke compared to non-Hispanic White men. Physical activity (PA) is a modifiable health behavior that has been shown to decrease chronic disease risk; yet, PA engagement is alarmingly low in African American men. Interventions to improve PA engagement are effective in a number of populations; however, very few have been tailored to the unique needs of African American men.

The importance of conducting inclusive research is well-established, yet recruiting a sample which reflects the distribution of a disease or condition within a target population has proven elusive for many triallists. We draw on our experiences of achieving inclusive recruitment through the intentional protocol design and delivery in the ILANA (Implementing Long-Acting Novel Antiretrovirals) study to highlight some tangible steps that could be extrapolated to trials to aid inclusive recruitment to research and produce findings which can contribute to tackling health inequities. These include the importance of meaningful public involvement from start to finish, drawing on existing data to determine appropriate targets, factoring targets into analysis plans through pre-specified analyses and triangulation with qualitative data, and making targets mandatory (rather than aspirational) through a range of strategies.
