Introduction: African American women (AA), particularly those living in the Southeastern USA, experience disproportionately high rates of HIV infection. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective HIV prevention tool that may circumvent barriers to traditional HIV prevention tools, such as condom use; however, very little is known about how to improve PrEP access and uptake among AA women who may benefit from PrEP use. This project aims to understand how to increase PrEP access among AA women in the rural Southern USA, which may ultimately affect HIV incidence in this population.
Methods And Analysis: The goal of the current study is to systematically adapt a patient-provider communication tool to increase PrEP uptake among AA women receiving care at a federally qualified health centre in Alabama. We will use an iterative implementation process, by assessing the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary impact of the tool on PrEP uptake, using a pilot preintervention/postintervention design (N=125). We will evaluate women's reasons for declining a referral to a PrEP provider, reasons for incomplete referrals, reasons for not initiating PrEP after a successful referral and ongoing PrEP use at 3 and 12 months after PrEP initiation among our sample. The proposed work will significantly contribute to our understanding of factors impacting PrEP uptake and use among AA women, particularly in underserved areas in the Deep South that are heavily impacted by the HIV epidemic and experience worse HIV-related health outcomes relative to other areas in the USA.
Ethics And Dissemination: This protocol has been approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at University of Alabama at Birmingham (Birmingham, AL; protocol 300004276). All participants will review a detailed informed consent form approved by the IRB and will provide written or verbal informed consent prior to enrolment. Results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed manuscripts, reports, and local, national and international presentations.
Trial Registration Number: NCT04373551.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a type of diabetes mellitus occurring in pregnant women, increases the risk of birth trauma. Solute carrier family 2 member 4 (SLC2A4) polymorphism is notably associated with GDM susceptibility; however, the mechanism is unknown. In the present study, HTR-8/SVneo cells were treated with high glucose concentrations and transfected with SLC2A4 and Forkhead box O (FoxO)1 to investigate their roles in the insulin (INS) resistance of GDM trophoblast cells.

Measles is a highly infectious, notifiable, viral disease that is commonly contracted in childhood and associated with a characteristic rash. Most children and young people who contract measles make a full recovery, but measles infection is associated with rare but serious complications in vulnerable groups, such young infants, immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles infection, but uptake of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine in the UK has fallen short of the vaccine coverage required to provide herd immunity and prevent measles outbreaks.

Purpose: Black women with hormone receptor-positive (HR +) breast cancer are twice as likely as White women to have weakly HR + tumors (1-10% positive cells). Patients with weakly HR + tumors are less frequently prescribed ET and have 60% higher mortality than strongly HR + tumors (> 10% positive cells). We evaluated factors associated with ET prescription and self-reported use among Black women with HR + breast cancer.

Myocardial fibrosis, a key pathological feature of hypertensive heart disease (HHD), remains diagnostically challenging due to limited clinical tools. In this study, a FAPI-targeted uptake mechanism previously reported by our group, originally developed for tumor imaging, is extended to the detection of myocardial fibrosis in HHD using [F]F-NOTA-FAPI-MB. The diagnostic performance of this tracer is compared with those of [F]F-FDG, [F]F-FAPI-42, and [F]F-NOTA-FAP2286, and its potential for fluorescence imaging is also evaluated.

It is a key part of a midwife's role to promote vaccine uptake in pregnancy. Therefore, gaining an understanding of midwives' perceptions of the issue is crucial for identifying factors influencing vaccine uptake in Wales.
