Background: Despite adequate antipsychotic treatment, most people with schizophrenia continue to exhibit persistent positive and negative symptoms and cognitive impairments. The current study was designed to examine the efficacy and safety of adjunctive anti-inflammatory combination therapy for these illness manifestations.
Methods: Thirty-nine people with either Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision, schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were entered into a 12-week double-blind, 2-arm, triple-dummy, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial: 19 were randomized to anti-inflammatory combination therapy and 20 were randomized to placebo.

Background: Evidence regarding the performance of Bipolar Disorder patients (BD) on Emotional Processing (EP) is conflicting, suggesting that heterogeneity within this population may exist. It is not completely understood if this impacts on clinical presentation and functional outcomes.
Methods: A total of 212 BD patients were recruited.

Neuropsychological abilities may underlie successful performance of everyday functioning and social skills. We aimed to determine the strongest neuropsychological predictors of performance-based functional capacity and social skills performance across the spectrum of severe mental illness (SMI). Unemployed outpatients with SMI (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression; n = 151) were administered neuropsychological (expanded MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery), functional capacity (UCSD Performance-Based Skills Assessment-Brief; UPSA-B), and social skills (Social Skills Performance Assessment; SSPA) assessments.

The Managing Emotions branch of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT-ME) was included within the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) as the measure of social cognition, although limited research has examined its associations with psychosocial functioning in people with schizophrenia or other severe mental illnesses. This secondary analysis with 107 participants examined what the MSCEIT-ME contributes to our understanding of functioning in this population, and whether it uniquely predicts psychosocial functioning after controlling for performance on the other MCCB tests and negative symptoms. Performance on the MSCEIT-ME was significantly correlated with all three MCCP factors (processing speed, attention/working memory, learning) within schizophrenia-schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and other mixed diagnoses groups.
