Article Abstract

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) show enormous potential as a large-scale energy storage technique. However, the growth of Zn dendrites and serious side reactions occurring at the Zn anode hinder the practical application of AZIBs. For the first time, we reported a fluorine-containing surfactant, i.e., potassium perfluoro-1-butanesulfonate (PPFBS), as an additive to the 2 M ZnSO electrolyte. Benefitting from its hydrophilic sulfonate anion and hydrophobic long fluorocarbon chain, PPFBS can promote the uniform distribution of Zn flux at the anode/electrolyte interface, allowing the Zn/Zn cell to cycle for 2200 h. Furthermore, PPFBS could inhibit side reactions due to the existence of the perfluorobutyl sulfonate (CFSO) adsorption layer and the presence of CFSO in the solvation structure of Zn. The former can reduce the amount of HO molecules and SO in contact with the Zn anode and CFSO entering the Zn-solvation structure by replacing SO. The Zn/Cu cell exhibits a superior average CE of 99.47% over 500 cycles. When coupled with the VO cathode, the full cell shows impressive cycle stability. This work provides a simple, effective, and economical solution to the common issues of the Zn anode.

A hydrophilic cross-linked proton exchange membrane was constructed in a Nafion matrix based on azide polysulfone containing sulfonic acid (SPSU-N) and alkynyl substituted polyvinyl alcohol (APVA) through azide-alkyne click chemistry reaction. Arising from the increased polarity of the cross-linked network and high cross-linking density, the alcohol barrier performance of the Nafion membrane was greatly improved. The methanol permeability of the Nafion/cross-linked SPSU-N and APVA membrane decreases to 1.

This study reports the preparation of MIL-100(Fe)-GO composites by a one-pot synthesis approach at room temperature, assisted by ultrasonication. The synthesized MIL-100(Fe)-GO composites were utilized as a filler for the preparation of a sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK)-based proton exchange membrane (PEM). The in situ development of MIL-100(Fe) on GO creates a strong interaction between GO and MIL-100(Fe), which enhances the surface roughness (confirmed from the AFM study) of the SPEEK membrane with its incorporation as a filler.

This study explored the potential of blending poly-(ether sulfone)/disulfonated poly-(ether sulfone) (PES/SPES) at various weight ratios with and without polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to enhance the membrane properties for potential applications like fuel cells, water treatment, and lithium-ion battery separators. SPES was appropriately synthesized as a copolymer constituted of alternated unsulfonated (ES) and disulfonated (SES) sequences, achieving a degree of sulfonation of about 100%. SPES improved the membrane's hydrophilicity, while PVP acts as compatibilizer of PES/SPES blends and pore creator.

Sulfonated polystyrene membranes exhibit a nanostructure characterized by tortuous, interconnected hydrophilic pores enclosed by a hydrophobic polymer domain. The characteristic pore size plays a crucial role in determining the salt partition coefficients. To directly relate pore size to salt partitioning, we construct a simplified pore space confined between flat sulfonated polystyrene walls.

With the rapid expansion of textile printing and aquaculture industries, efficient dye wastewater treatment is urgently needed. Here, magnetic sulfonic acid-functionalized covalent organic frameworks (FeO@TpBD-SOH COFs) were synthesized via a functional defect strategy using 4-aminobenzene-1,3-disulfonic acid (ADSA) as a competing monomer, generating periodic and sulfonate-rich nano adsorbent. Adsorption experiments involving malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV) in single and binary systems, supported by adsorption model fitting, indicated multimolecular adsorption through non-parallel molecular orientations.
