Objectives: Natural products (NP) play a crucial role in the development of new compounds, due to their complex chemical structure and pharmacological diversity. Neurodegenerative diseases and other disorders in the central nervous system (CNS) have become a significant problem in the world due to the increase in life expectancy of the elderly population. This increases the risk of developing diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease.

Gephyrin is the main scaffolding protein at inhibitory synapses, clustering glycine and GABA receptors. At specific GABAergic synapses, the nucleotide exchange factor collybistin recruits gephyrin to the postsynaptic membrane via interaction with phosphoinositides. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the formation, maintenance, and regulation of collybistin-dependent gephyrin clusters remain poorly understood.

A sustained imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms within the glutamatergic and GABAergic systems of the cerebral cortex, induced by noxious stimuli, is a fundamental characteristic in the development and maintenance of chronic pain. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the roles and interaction of glutamatergic and GABAergic systems in the processing of chronic pain signals. Specifically, we present a systematic summary of the processing patterns of the cerebral cortex in the cross-modular integration and output of chronic pain information, according to four aspects, molecular, cellular, neural network and behavioral cognition.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by restricted social communication and repetitive behaviors. Prenatal stress is critical in neurodevelopment and increases risk for ASD, particularly in those with greater genetic susceptibility to stress. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is one of the most abundant ω-3 fatty acids in the membrane phospholipids of the mammalian brain, and dietary DHA plays an important role in brain development and maintenance of brain structure.

Zolpidem, or commercially known as Ambien or Stilnox, is a sedative-hypnotic agent, which is usually prescribed to manage sleeping difficulties in individuals with insomnia. The site of its sedative-hypnotic action is the γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptor, which it shares with benzodiazepines. However, this substance has been consistently associated to awaken patients with brain injuries such as trauma, stroke, disorders of consciousness and has also been expanded to the recovery of brain function in the event of hypoxic damage, cerebrovascular ischemic injury, infection of the central nervous system, toxins and poisoning, degenerative diseases, tumors, and congenital disorders.
