Article Abstract

NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission intentionally impacted the asteroid Dimorphos on September 26, 2022, and this kinetic impact changed Dimorphos’ orbit around its binary companion Didymos. This first planetary defense test explored technological readiness for this method of asteroid deflection.

The future range resolved spaceborne ozone differential absorption lidar (SODIAL) is expected to fill the current observation gap, especially in areas where in-situ observation and passive remote sensing are difficult. The spaceborne ozone lidar preparatory research mission (SOLPRM) proposed by the State Administration of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defense, People's Republic of China, aims to develop the SODIAL. Projections of tropical rainfall under global warming remain highly uncertain, largely because of an unclear climate response to a potential weakening of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Although an AMOC slowdown can substantially alter tropical rainfall patterns, the physical mechanisms linking high-latitude changes to tropical hydroclimate are poorly understood. Here we demonstrate that an AMOC slowdown drives widespread shifts in tropical rainfall through the propagation of high-latitude cooling into the tropical North Atlantic.

Bats host a high diversity of coronaviruses, including betacoronaviruses that have caused outbreaks and pandemics in humans and other species. Here, we study the spatiotemporal dynamics of co-circulating coronaviruses in Pteropus spp bats (flying foxes) in eastern Australia over a three-year period across five roost sites (n = 2537 fecal samples). In total, we identify six betacoronavirus clades, all within the nobecovirus subgenus.
