Purpose: The combination of multi-layer flat panel detector (FPDT) X-ray imaging and physics-based material decomposition algorithms allows for the removal of anatomical structures. However, the reliability of these algorithms may be compromised by unaccounted materials or scattered radiation.
Approach: We investigated the two-material decomposition performance of a multi-layer FPDT in the context of 2D chest radiography without and with a 13:1 anti-scatter grid employed.

In recent years the treatment for heart failure (HF) has become much more complex. This development has highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary HF team to ensure the best possible individually adapted treatment decisions, taking the patient's personal wishes into account and to achieve optimal results. In Germany, specialized HF practices, clinics and tertiary bespoke HF unit centers were established to ensure qualified care for HF patients.

The Martini model is a coarse-grained force field allowing simulations of biomolecular systems as well as a range of materials including different types of nanomaterials of technological interest. Recently, a new version of the force field (version 3) has been released that includes new parameters for lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and a number of small molecules, but not yet carbon nanomaterials. Here, we present new Martini models for three major types of carbon nanomaterials: fullerene, carbon nanotubes, and graphene.

Patients with body cavity effusions are often seen in veterinary practice. However, the underlying causes of effusion formation are numerous and to draw conclusions about the underlying pathogenesis, further laboratory diagnostic work-up is essential. An initial classification of the pathomechanism (transudate versus exudate) may already be achieved using simple tools that are generally available in every practice (e.
