Article Abstract

This work presents a biophysical model of diffusion and relaxation MRI for prostate called relaxation vascular, extracellular and restricted diffusion for cytometry in tumours (rVERDICT). The model includes compartment-specific relaxation effects providing T1/T2 estimates and microstructural parameters unbiased by relaxation properties of the tissue. 44 men with suspected prostate cancer (PCa) underwent multiparametric MRI (mp-MRI) and VERDICT-MRI followed by targeted biopsy. We estimate joint diffusion and relaxation prostate tissue parameters with rVERDICT using deep neural networks for fast fitting. We tested the feasibility of rVERDICT estimates for Gleason grade discrimination and compared with classic VERDICT and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) from mp-MRI. The rVERDICT intracellular volume fraction f discriminated between Gleason 3 + 3 and 3 + 4 (p = 0.003) and Gleason 3 + 4 and ≥ 4 + 3 (p = 0.040), outperforming classic VERDICT and the ADC from mp-MRI. To evaluate the relaxation estimates we compare against independent multi-TE acquisitions, showing that the rVERDICT T2 values are not significantly different from those estimated with the independent multi-TE acquisition (p > 0.05). Also, rVERDICT parameters exhibited high repeatability when rescanning five patients (R = 0.79-0.98; CV = 1-7%; ICC = 92-98%). The rVERDICT model allows for accurate, fast and repeatable estimation of diffusion and relaxation properties of PCa sensitive enough to discriminate Gleason grades 3 + 3, 3 + 4 and ≥ 4 + 3.

Multi-compartment diffusion-relaxation MR signal representation in the spherical 3D-SHORE basis.

Modelling the diffusion-relaxation magnetic resonance (MR) signal obtained from multi-parametric sequences has recently gained immense interest in the community due to new techniques significantly reducing data acquisition time. A preferred approach for examining the diffusion-relaxation MR data is to follow the continuum modelling principle that employs kernels to represent the tissue features, such as the relaxations or diffusion properties. However, constructing reasonable dictionaries with predefined signal components depends on the sampling density of model parameter space, thus leading to a geometrical increase in the number of atoms per extra tissue parameter considered in the model.

This study examined the effect of natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) concentration on the kinetics of glucomannan swelling and deacetylation during the purification process and the characteristics of purified porang glucomannan (PGM). NADES was prepared from betaine and 1,2-propanediol (BPG14) at concentrations ranging from 30 % to 100 % (W/W). The deacetylation degree, along with the structural, thermal, and rheological properties of PGM, as well as the rate of glucomannan swelling and deacetylation, were investigated.

Objectives: Unruptured brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) typically do not cause aphasia, even when the traditional language areas are affected by the nidus. We attempted to elucidate its language reorganization mechanism by analyzing the alterations in functional connectivity using functional connectivity (FC) and track-weighted static functional connectivity (TW-sFC) approaches.

Methods: This cross-sectional study prospectively enrolled patients with AVMs involving left-hemisphere language areas and healthy controls.

The T1rho mapping technique necessitates acquiring multiple T1rho-weighted images at various spin-lock times (TSL), which results in a lengthy scan time and significantly limits its widespread clinical use. Undersampling is a significant strategy to accelerate T1rho imaging, where it is crucial to model and utilize the joint spatiotemporal correlations priors among different TSL multi-contrast images for high-quality reconstruction. However, current methods that use simplified physical relaxation correlations or black-box deep neural networks to define joint correlations often yield inaccurate results.

Brownian motion with stochastic energy renewals.

Chaos

Institut für Theoretische Physik II - Weiche Materie, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, D-40225 Düsseldorf, Germany.

We investigate the impact of intermittent energy injections on a Brownian particle, modeled as stochastic renewals of its kinetic energy to a fixed value. Between renewals, the particle follows standard underdamped Langevin dynamics. For energy renewals occurring at a constant rate, we find non-Boltzmannian energy distributions that undergo a shape transition driven by the competition between the velocity relaxation timescale and the renewal timescale.
