Article Abstract

The development process of self-growth among Chinese hospice volunteers is poorly understood. This study aimed to explore and delineate their dynamic progression toward self-growth. This qualitative study used grounded theory to analyze semi-structured interview data using individual in-depth face-to-face interviews with 15 volunteers at a hospice care center in Ningbo, China, between January 2021 and January 2022. Data analysis was based on the open, axial, and selective coding stages of grounded theory and used the constant comparative method. From the interview data, we extracted 1 core category (Death awakening life), 4 categories, and 19 subcategories that pertained to the process of self-growth. The 4 categories delineated the process of self-growth; respondents progressed through self-salvation, self-reflection, self-healing, and self-transcendence stages. The 19 subcategories are introduced and illustrated with interview extracts. The study findings can inform the development of training projects aimed at improving hospice care volunteer services.

This study used the Q methodology to examine how Korean science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students perceive the experience of reading classical texts and how such experiences relate to their overall well-being. We developed 31 statements for the Q-sorting process and collected data from 39 undergraduate students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The analysis identified three distinct perception types: type 1-exploratory type, which broadens thinking through diverse perspectives, type 2-experience type, which shares achievement and enjoyment through reading together, and type 3-insight type, which seeks universal values and truth.

Applying the dual-process model of coping with bereavement, we examined how dementia family caregivers and parents of medically complex children (MCC) experience and cope with loss on a daily basis. Integrating caregiving experiences at both ends of the lifespan revealed largely similar experiences of loss in caregiving as well as nuanced differences in grieving and coping. Using interview data from 26 dementia family caregivers and 26 MCC caregivers, the analysis revealed that both types of caregivers experience loss-orientation, restoration-orientation, and communication-based triggers that move them between the two.

The formation of thrombi in blood-contacting devices is accompanied by a several risks that can be life-threatening. Specifically, the process of blood exposure immediately after implantation triggers an immune response aimed at removing foreign substances, which can lead to thrombosis, inflammation and device malfunction. To confer anticoagulant properties to the implanted devices, a nano-selenium hydrogel coating which was in-situ self-growing on implant devices had been developed that inhibited thrombosis by intervening in the inflammatory cell activation pathway, possibly by decreasing tissue factor activity and thrombin production expressed by inflammatory cells.

Simulating production in microbial consortia is crucial for optimizing metabolic engineering strategies to achieve high yields. However, existing algorithms for modeling polymicrobial metabolic fluxes, based on genome-scale metabolic networks, often overlook the conflicts and coordination between biosynthesis tasks and self-growth interests, leading to limited prediction accuracy. This study introduces the Polymicrobial cell factory Yield Forecasting (PYF) algorithm, which simulates the relationships between biosynthesis and growth more effectively by incorporating the expression degrees of biosynthesis pathways.

Objectives: Lived experience input is becoming recognised as vital to developing and delivering high quality research. However, employment as a lived experience researcher can create identity conflict, which can undermine well-being. In this study, we explored the nuances of both social identification and identity integration processes in individuals with lived experience of psychosis employed in research.
