We review the fabrication and transport characterization of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)/Bernal bilayer graphene (BLG) moiré superlattices. Due to the moiré effect, the hBN/BLG moiré superlattices exhibit an energy gap at the charge neutrality point (CNP) even in the absence of a perpendicular electric field. In BLG, the application of a perpendicular electric field tunes the energy gap at the CNP, which contrasts with single-layer graphene and is similar to the family of rhombohedral multilayer graphene.

The dispersion of topological surface bands in MnBiTe-based magnetic topological insulator heterostructures is strongly affected by band hybridization and is spatially inhomogeneous due to varying surface layer terminations on microscopic length scales. Here, we apply micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with tunable photon energy from 18 to 30 eV to distinguish bulk valence and conduction bands from surface bands on the three surface terminations of MnBiTe. We observe a strong enhancement of photoemission intensity from the topological surface bands at the Bi Oabsorption edge, which is exploited to visualize a gapless Dirac cone on the MnBiTe-terminated surface and varying degrees of hybridization effects in the surface bands on the two distinct BiTe-terminated surfaces.

Weyl metals, known for their topological structure and chiral anomaly, exhibit nonlinear transport that defies conventional theory. In this study, ZrTe, an inversion-symmetric Dirac semimetal tunable to a Weyl state by magnetic field, is investigated, and rectification (alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) conversion) and third harmonic generation in longitudinal configurations is revealed. Despite its bulk inversion symmetry, symmetry-forbidden rectification and a dynamic phase transition arising from the chiral anomaly are observed.

Collective oscillations of massless charge carriers in two-dimensional materials-Dirac plasmon polaritons (DPPs)-are of paramount importance for engineering nanophotonic devices with tunable optical response. However, tailoring the optical properties of DPPs in a nanomaterial is a very challenging task, particularly at terahertz (THz) frequencies, where the DPP momentum is more than one order of magnitude larger than that of the free-space photons, and DDP attenuation is high. Here, we conceive and demonstrate a strategy to tune the DPP dispersion in topological insulator metamaterials.

We report our theoretical investigation into both the twist angle-dependent and the electric field-controlled second harmonic generation (SHG) effect in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) based on the four-band continuum model and independent-particle approximation. This analytical theory provides a quantitative explanation for the twist angle-dependent SHG effect observed in noncentrosymmetric tBLG, as reported in [Matter3, 1361 (2020)10.1016/j.
