Article Abstract

Ocean warming is killing corals, but heat-tolerant populations exist; if protected, they could replenish affected reefs naturally or through restoration. Palau's Rock Islands experience consistently higher temperatures and extreme heatwaves, yet their diverse coral communities bleach less than those on Palau's cooler outer reefs. Here, we combined genetic analyses, bleaching histories and growth rates of Porites cf. lobata colonies to identify thermally tolerant genotypes, map their distribution, and investigate potential growth trade-offs. We identified four genetic lineages of P. cf. lobata. On Palau's outer reefs, a thermally sensitive lineage dominates. The Rock Islands harbor two lineages with enhanced thermal tolerance; one of which shows no consistent growth trade-off and also occurs on several outer reefs. This suggests that the Rock Islands provide naturally tolerant larvae to neighboring areas. Finding and protecting such sources of thermally-tolerant corals is key to reef survival under 21 century climate change.

The Paleogene braided river delta deposits in the Lenghu tectonic belt of the northern Qaidam Basin document an environmental transition critical for understanding regional petroleum systems. Through integration of petrographic (thin-section and heavy mineral analyses), geochemical (trace and rare earth element analyses), and geophysical (well logging and 2D seismic interpretation) methods, this study investigates paleoclimate, paleosalinity, paleoredox conditions, provenance, and paleosedimentary evolution. A transition from humid, freshwater, oxic to semiarid-induced brackish, suboxic conditions is revealed, characterized by increasing salinity, depth, and reducibility, particularly during the deposition of the Xiaganchaigou Formation.

Rockbursts are common dynamic phenomena in coal mining and have become a prominent topic in the mining industry. This study examines the isolated island coal face in an extra-thick, fully mechanized top-coal caving operation in deep burial conditions, using it as a representative case. A comprehensive pressure relief strategy was employed at the coal face, incorporating directional roof blasting and loose roof blasting techniques.

Assessment of Surface Radiogenic Heat Flow in Volcanic Rocks of Trindade Island, South Atlantic Ocean, Brazil.

Heat loss from Earth's interior, driven by conduction and convection, influences lithospheric thermal regimes. This heat originates from mantle convection, primordial planetary accretion, and the decay of radioactive heat-producing elements (RHPE: U-238, U-235, Th-232 and K-40), which contribute around 98% of Earth's radiogenic heat production, crucial for surface radioactive heat flux (SRHF). Understanding RHPE is key to studying geothermal dynamics, especially in volcanic regions like Trindade Island, Brazil.

The present study assessed the impact of the disposable Simplera Sync™ sensor with the MiniMed™ 780G (MM780G) advanced hybrid closed-loop (AHCL) system on type 1 diabetes (T1D) glycemic metrics, insulin delivery, and safety. Youths (aged 7-17 years) and adults (aged 18-80 years) with T1D were enrolled in this single-arm, nonrandomized study at 24 sites in the United States. Participants began with an ∼2-week run-in period where hybrid closed-loop (HCL; auto basal only) or open-loop insulin delivery was used, followed by an ∼3-month study period with AHCL activated.

Objective: Weight regain following bariatric surgery remains a clinical challenge, with limited understanding of contributing environmental factors. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), persistent chemicals linked to metabolic dysfunction, may influence long-term weight trajectories. This study aimed to evaluate associations between PFAS exposure and changes in BMI, percent weight loss, and waist circumference among adolescents after bariatric surgery.
