In this study, the non-linear dynamics of Taylor-Couette flow in a very small-aspect-ratio wide-gap annulus in a counter-rotating regime under the influence of radial through-flow are investigated by solving its full three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. Depending on the intensity of the radial flow, either an axisymmetric (pure [Formula: see text] mode) pulsating flow structure or an axisymmetric axially propagating vortex will appear subcritical, i.e. below the centrifugal instability threshold of the circular Couette flow. We show that the propagating vortices can be stably existed in two separate parameter regions, which feature different underlying dynamics. Although in one regime, the flow appears only as a limit cycle solution upon which saddle-node-invariant-circle bifurcation occurs, but in the other regime, it shows more complex dynamics with richer Hopf bifurcation sequences. That is, by presence of incommensurate frequencies, it can be appeared as 1-, 2- and 3-torus solutions, which is known as the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse route to chaos. Therefore, the observed bifurcation scenario is the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse route to chaos and the period doubling bifurcation, which exhibit rich and complex dynamics.

We prove analytically that the two fundamental rheological equations for (elastic) disc suspensions and long flexible polymers, the so-called Oldroyd-A and -B models, respectively, predict the same flow and total stress fields in any planar incompressible flow. We illustrate this equivalence for creeping flow in a cross-slot channel and investigate differences arising from three-dimensional effects in a weakly elastic Taylor-Couette flow. Finally, we discuss implications for understanding elastic instabilities, controlling inertial turbulence, and deriving constitutive models for complex fluids.

The standard magnetorotational instability (SMRI) with a magnetic field component parallel to the rotation axis is widely believed to be responsible for the fast accretion in astronomical disks. In conventional base flows with a Keplerian profile or an ideal Couette profile, most studies focus on axisymmetric SMRI, since excitation of nonaxisymmetric SMRI in such flows requires a magnetic Reynolds number (Rm) more than an order of magnitude larger. Here, we report that, in a magnetized Taylor-Couette flow, nonaxisymmetric SMRI with an azimuthal mode number m=1 can be triggered by a free-shear layer in the base flow at Rm≳1, the same threshold as for axisymmetric SMRI.

Different approaches are being developed to efficiently produce in vitro platelets from cultured megakaryocytes to meet the constant demand of platelet transfusion and serve for research purposes. Recent works have shown that turbulence and periodic stress can significantly enhance platelet yield. Here we have developed and characterized a platelet production device that takes in account these properties.

Superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS) offer versatile applications by trapping an air layer within microstructures, while water jet impact can destabilize this air layer and deactivate the functions of the SHS. The current work presents for the first time that introducing parallel hydrophilic strips to SHS (SHS-s) can simultaneously improve both water impalement resistance and drag reduction (DR). Compared with SHS, SHS-s demonstrates a 125% increase in the enduring time against the impact of water jet with velocity of 11.

The green organic semiconductor, tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (Alq), was hybridized with DNA growing in the shape of hexagonal prismatic crystals. In this study, we applied hydrodynamic flow to the fabrication of Alq crystals doped with DNA molecules. The hydrodynamic flow in the Taylor-Couette reactor induced nanoscale pores in the Alq crystals, especially at the side part of the particles.
