Background: Effective communication and collaboration among clinical and nonclinical staff are critical to the health and safety of the staff, for optimal team performance and for safe patient care. While respiratory protective equipment are routine key strategies to protect healthcare workers from exposure to select respiratory pathogens, they have been demonstrated to disrupt speech intelligibility. The COVID-19 pandemic escalated the need for and utilization of respiratory protection in all healthcare settings.

Müller-Lyer Illusion in Adults Increases with Age but Is Not Affected by Mild Visual Acuity Loss.

Eye Brain

September 2025

National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Diseases, Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: To investigate the impact of mild visual acuity loss on the Müller-Lyer illusion in adults and evaluate its potential as a clinical indicator for visual-cognitive integration mechanisms.

Methods: Three experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 measured illusion intensity in 49 young adults (25.

A pilot study on the impact of wearing powered air-purifying respirators on speech intelligibility.

J Occup Environ Hyg

September 2025

Department of Environmental Agricultural and Occupational Health, College of Public Health, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska.

Powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) have become an increasingly utilized form of respiratory protection against highly infectious aerosols. In the United States, PAPRs have been used in high-level clinical isolation settings to care for patients infected with viral hemorrhagic fevers and, more recently, during the COVID-19 pandemic. PAPRs have long been used for biocontainment care and experienced increased use during the pandemic because they provide full-face visibility and eye and respiratory protection.

The role of human thermoregulation in thermal discomfort in lower-limb prosthetics: A scoping review.

Can Prosthet Orthot J

March 2025

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland.

Background: Thermal discomfort is one of the most prevalent issues experienced by lower-limb prosthetic users where, on average, 54% of users report thermal-related issues. This arises from wearing a prosthetic socket, which may disrupt the thermoregulatory system due to the low thermal conductivity of materials used in prosthetic sockets and liners. Despite the reported prevalence, there is little understanding of the impact of wearing a prosthesis on the body's thermoregulatory system and how users perceive thermal discomfort.

Investigating the performance of asphalt pavements modified with reclaimed asphalt and crumb rubber.

Sci Rep

September 2025

Highway Engineering Key Lab of Sichuan Province, School of Civil Engineering, Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu, 610031, China.

This research provides useful insights into sustainable and cost-effective pavement rehabilitation by evaluating the combined effects of both Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and Crumb Rubber (CR) modification on flexible pavement performance using actual motorway sections. Pavement rehabilitation and maintenance can enhance the design and serviceable life of the pavement. Additionally, modification of asphalt with Crumb Rubber (CR) and Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) not only proves to be economical but can also increase the resistance of flexible pavement concerning rutting, fatigue, and moisture damage.
