On-surface synthesis is a powerful methodology for the fabrication of low-dimensional functional materials. The precursor molecules usually anchor on different metal surfaces similar configurations. The activation energies are therefore solely determined by the chemical activity of the respective metal surfaces. Here, we studied the influence of the detailed adsorption configuration on the activation energy on different metal surfaces. We systematically studied the desulfonylation homocoupling for a molecular precursor on Au(111) and Ag(111) and found that the activation energy is lower on inert Au(111) than on Ag(111). Combining scanning tunneling microscopy observations, synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy measurements, and density functional theory calculations, we elucidate that the phenomenon arises from different molecule-substrate interactions. The molecular precursors anchor on Au(111) Au-S interactions, which lead to weakening of the phenyl-S bonds. On the other hand, the molecular precursors anchor on Ag(111) Ag-O interactions, resulting in the lifting of the S atoms. As a consequence, the activation barrier of the desulfonylation reactions is higher on Ag(111), although silver is generally more chemically active than gold. Our study not only reports a new type of on-surface chemical reaction but also clarifies the influence of detailed adsorption configurations on specific on-surface chemical reactions.

Zeolite-confined Rh-based catalysts have emerged as promising heterogeneous candidates for olefin hydroformylation. However, they face challenges of reactant- and product-induced Rh leaching and aggregation. Herein, zeolite framework-anchored Rh-(O-Zn) sites were designed and are shown to have remarkable activity and stability for gas-phase ethylene hydroformylation.

The synthesis of -tetrakis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)porphyrin [HT(3,4,5-OCH)PP] and cobalt(II) -tetrakis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)porphyrin [Co(T(3,4,5-OCH)PP)] has been successfully accomplished. The oxidation properties of [Co(T(3,4,5-OCH)PP)] have been assessed through UV-vis, NMR, and EPR techniques. It can be seen in the UV-vis spectrum that adding SbCl caused extra peaks to appear at 674 nm, which means that a π-cation radical was formed.

This study aimed to histomorphometrically evaluate the effect of guided bone regeneration (GBR) and two implant surfaces on the thickness and height of newly formed bone in dehiscence defects around titanium implants. Three premolars and the first bilateral molar were extracted from ten adult mongrel dogs, and 40 buccal bone dehiscences measuring 5 mm in height and 4 mm in width were created using a University of North Carolina (UNC) periodontal probe to confirm the dimensions. Forty implants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: oxidized implant surfaces (OIS, n = 10), turned/machined implant surfaces (TIS, n = 10), OIS + GBR (n = 10), and TIS + GBR (n = 10).

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are emerging contaminants increasingly recognized for their environmental and health implications. While surface water systems have been extensively studied, the presence, behavior, and impacts of MNPs in groundwater remain underexplored, despite its critical role as water source worldwide. The findings in this review highlight that agricultural activities, particularly plastic mulches, pesticides containers, fertilizer bags, greenhouses, are major sources of MNP.

We demonstrate a class of Co and CoPc molecular Kondo boxes on the Au(111) surface through scanning tunneling microscopy experiments and first-principles calculations. The π-electron states of the CoPc molecule hybridize with the conduction electron states of the Au(111) substrate, imparting itinerantlike electron characteristics. Because of the high symmetry matching between the d_{π} orbitals of Co adatoms and the π orbitals of CoPc, the large orbital overlap predominates the formation of a Kondo singlet within the molecular complexes that prevail over the competition from the metal substrate, enabling them effectively as the molecular Kondo boxes.
