Fluids leaked from oil and gas wells often originate from their surface casing─a steel pipe installed beneath the deepest underlying source of potable groundwater that serves as the final barrier around the well system. In this study, we analyze a regulatory dataset of surface casing geochemical samples collected from 2573 wells in northeastern Colorado─the only known publicly available dataset of its kind. Thermogenic gas was present in the surface casings of 96.2% of wells with gas samples. Regulatory records indicate that 73.3% of these wells were constructed to isolate the formation from which the gas originated with cement. This suggests that gas migration into the surface casing annulus predominantly occurs through compromised barriers (e.g., steel casings or cement seals), indicative of extensive integrity issues in the region. Water was collected from 22.6% of sampled surface casings. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes were detected in 99.7% of surface casing water samples tested for these compounds, which may be due to the presence of leaked oil, natural gas condensate, or oil-based drilling mud. Our findings demonstrate the value of incorporating surface casing geochemical analysis in well integrity monitoring programs to identify integrity issues and focus leak mitigation efforts.

The tribological performance of a novel nonmetallic composite casing coating is investigated under dry wear conditions and different side loads and rotational speeds. The coating is composed of a short-glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix with silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, and calcium carbonate nanofillers to provide a protective barrier against contact with hardened drill pipe tool joints. The results revealed that the wear behavior was highly dependent on the applied side load and rotational speed.

Fatty acid photodecarboxylase (FAP) was recently discovered in microalgae and is a photoenzyme that harvests sunlight to convert long-chain fatty acids to hydrocarbons. The hydrophobicity of the substrates and photoproducts strongly affects the stability of FAP studies. Here, we incorporated zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) as structural protecting cages and characterized FAP (FAP) in ZIFs.

To address the issues of low frequency and high costs associated with the current manual production measurement for ESP wells in the Tarim Oilfield, a study was conducted to develop a digital production measurement method for ESP wells. Based on the principle of energy conservation, where the input power of the pump equals the output power of the motor, and incorporating parameters such as surface tubing and casing pressure, motor current, and motor/ pump performance curves, with viscosity correction of the pump performance curve, a corrected power calculation method was proposed. A digital production measurement mathematical model was established.

Bulk sausages packaged by natural animal or artificial collagen casings are highly susceptible to microbial contamination. In this study, quality changes of sausages packaged by animal casings were monitored and bacterial community dynamics on casing surfaces were analyzed by combining conventional bacterial culture methods and 16S rDNA sequencing during 30-day storage at 4 °C. Followed by evaluating the spoilage ability of the identified dominant bacterial community, three specific spoilage organisms (SSOs) were identified: Brochothrix thermosphacta, Pseudomonas lundensis, and Weissella viridescens.

This paper presents a novel case study on successfully drilling the deepest surface hole in the Changuleh Oilfield in western Iran. The well between the Changuleh and Azar anticlines posed significant challenges due to its complex geological formations and high-pressure regimes. The main goal is to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of the Sarvak Formation, analyze its connection with Azar structures, and identify the water and oil interface.
