Article Abstract

Pulp and paper wastewater (PPWW) contains numerous refractory and harmful contaminants that require advanced treatment to meet the discharge criteria. This study compared the efficacy of two PPWW treatments: ultraviolet/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) and ultraviolet/HO (UV/HO) working under similar circumstances. The initial pH value, oxidant dosage, UV radiation intensity, and pseudo-first-order constant k were systematically studied in both systems. Optimally, the UV/PMS process produced an effluent of higher quality than the UV/HO, as measured by the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in 60 min, which were 48.2 and 64.3% for the respective UV/HO and UV/PMS processes and corresponding k values of 0.0102 and 0.0159 min, respectively. Radical scavenging experiments demonstrated that •OH was the primary reactive oxygen species in UV/HO process, and •OH and SO• in the UV/PMS process. Moreover, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled mass spectroscopy analyses showed that deep treatment of petroleum hydrocarbons with carbon chain lengths greater than 18 and macromolecular semi-volatile organic compounds in paper wastewater is difficult, whereas the UV/PMS process can significantly improve the removal of amides, esters, phenols, and other aromatic compounds.

Elevated expense of chemical media spurs a shift to non-chemical media in microalgal cultivation, while ensuring the safety of the resulting powder poses a challenge. No previous studies have evaluated the safety and application of Spirulina subsalsa powder cultivated in monosodium glutamate wastewater (MSGW) and seawater. In this study, an analysis of basic nutritional components in Spirulina subsalsa powder indicated that this algal powder had high protein content, low lipid content and rich mineral content.

Lignin, a negatively charged, three-dimensional natural biopolymer, serves as an ideal support for metal catalysts due to its abundant functional groups and tunable chemical properties, which enable strong metal coordination and effective immobilization. Herein, we demonstrate a lignin-mediated Co/O co-doped AgS, symbolized as L-AgCoOS, bimetal oxysulfide catalyst via a facile hydrolysis method for the efficient reduction of toxic phenolic compounds (4-nitrophenol, 4-NP), organic dyes (methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB), and heavy metal ions Cr(VI)) under dark conditions. Lignin, used to immobilize catalysts, also contributes to increasing the number of active catalytic sites and enhancing catalytic activity.

Treatment wetlands (TW) are a popular choice for decentralized wastewater treatment, with substantial documentation on their capacity to manage conventionally monitored pollutants. However, most insights into their effectiveness against emerging contaminants come from lab and mesocosm studies with a limited number of compounds, highlighting knowledge gaps in their performance at full scale. This study provides a first long-term, full-scale assessment of TW ability to remove a large number of organic micropollutants (OMPs) and manage antibiotic resistance under real-world conditions.

Dual-functional hydrochar via hydrothermal carbonization for norfloxacin removal: Fractal adsorption kinetics and mechanism elucidation.

Escalating concentrations of norfloxacin (NFX) in surface and wastewaters demand sustainable remediation strategies. In this study, dual-functional hydrochars were synthesized from argan nut shells (ArNS) via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), with process conditions optimized by varying temperature (150-200 °C) and residence time (2-6 h). Among the materials, H1:5@150-4-prepared at 150 °C for 4 h with a biomass-to-water ratio of 1:5-exhibited the best performance, achieving a monolayer NFX adsorption capacity of 27.

Mapping PFAS behavior via meta-analysis of soil dynamics, predictive modeling and policy integration.

Sci Total Environ

September 2025

University Hohenheim, Department of Process Analytics and Cereal Science, Stuttgart, 70599, Germany.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic pollutants with increasing prevalence in agricultural soils, primarily introduced through biosolid application, wastewater irrigation, and atmospheric deposition. This review provides a meta-analysis of terminologies across 145 peer-reviewed studies, identifying inconsistency in the classification of PFAS subgroups-such as "long-chain vs. short-chain," "precursors," and "emerging PFAS"-which hinders regulatory harmonization and model calibration.
