The Red Sea soft coral ethyl acetate extract has afforded one new cembranoid; sarcacutumolid A (), along with six known metabolites have been isolated from for the first time (). Chemical structures were elucidated by employing several spectroscopic analyses. The cytotoxic potential of the isolated compounds was assessed against four human cancer cell lines; hepatocellular (HepG2), cervical (HeLa), breast (MCF-7) and colorectal cancer (Colo-205). Sarcacutumolid A () and gorgosterol () inhibited colorectal cancer cell proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner with IC values of 35.5 and 44.0 μM, respectively.

Background: In 2023, Mayotte, a French department in the Mozambique channel, experienced a long drought that led to potable water restrictions. Although the French vaccination schedule makes polio vaccination compulsory for children, the large proportion of migrants on the island coupled with the water crisis raised concerns about the establishment of poliovirus transmission chains. Therefore, a surveillance was implemented to detect polioviruses in sewage sampled in the two main wastewater treatment plants.

Lipid metabolism plays an important role in aging and longevity, and lipophagy-a specialized form of autophagy that targets lipid vesicles-regulates lipid homeostasis and alleviates metabolic diseases such as metabolic dysfunctionassociated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Ilimaquinone (IQ), a sesquiterpene extracted from the sea, is well-known for its various biological effects; however, its effects on lipid metabolism and longevity have not yet been elucidated. In this study, IQ acted in a dose-dependent manner, extending the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans (C.

Echinorhynchids are a group of globally distributed acanthocephalan parasites mainly of freshwater, brackish and marine fishes and occasionally, reptiles and amphibians. During several parasitology surveys in the Gulf of Mexico and Northeast Pacific, Mexico, acanthocephalans were recovered from two marine fish species. The specimens from the Gulf of Mexico were identified as Caballerorhynchus lamothei (Cavisomidae), a typical parasite of the striped mojarra, whereas adult acanthocephalans from the Northeast Pacific, Mexico, from the Garibaldi fish exhibited morphological characteristics belonging to the family Transvenidae.

Extreme rainfall during the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) accounts for approximately 27 % of the total seasonal rainfall. Most of this moisture is transported from the Indian Ocean. Amid ongoing warming of the Indian Ocean, 2023 stood out as one of the warmest monsoon years on record.

Boat noise has been shown to distract and cause harm to many marine organisms. Most of the study effort has focused on fish & marine mammals, even though invertebrates represent over 92 % of all marine life. The few studies conducted on invertebrates have demonstrated clear negative effects of anthropogenic noise pollution.
