Homologous proteins can display high structural variation due to evolutionary divergence at low sequence identity. This classical inverse relationship between sequence identity and structural similarity, established many years ago, has remained true between homologous proteins of known structure over time. However, a large number of heteromeric proteins also exist in the structural data bank, where the interacting subunits belong to the same fold and maintain low sequence identity between themselves. It is not clear if there is any selection pressure to deviate from the inverse sequence-structure relationship for such interacting distant homologs, in comparison to pairs of homologs which are not known to interact. We examined 12,824 fold pairs of interacting homologs of known structure, which includes both heteromers and multi-domain proteins. These were compared with monomeric proteins, resulting in 26,082 fold pairs as a dataset of non-interacting homologous systems. Interacting homologs were found to retain higher structural similarity than non-interacting homologs at diminishing sequence identity in a statistically significant manner. Interacting homologs are more similar in their 3D structures than non-interacting homologs and have a preference towards symmetric association. There appears to be a structural constraint between remote homologs due to this commitment.

The ferret model is widely used to study influenza A viruses (IAVs) isolated from multiple avian and mammalian species, as IAVs typically replicate in the respiratory tract of ferrets without the need for prior host adaptation. During standard IAV risk assessments, tissues are routinely collected from ferrets at a fixed time point post-inoculation to assess the capacity for systemic spread. Here, we describe a data set of virus titers in tissues collected from both respiratory tract and extrapulmonary sites 3 days post-inoculation from over 300 ferrets inoculated with more than 100 unique IAVs (inclusive of H1, H2, H3, H5, H7, and H9 IAV subtypes, both mammalian and zoonotic origin).

We report two complete genome sequences of a putative novel orthotospovirus species in pepper fruits ( sp.) from South Africa, provisionally named (Capsicum orthotospovirus 1; CaV1). Its nucleocapsid protein shows less than 88% amino acid identity with other orthotospoviruses.

Time perception is an essential aspect of daily life, and transitional probabilities can be learned based on temporal durations that are independent of individual objects. Previous studies on temporal and spatial visual statistical learning (VSL) have shown that the hippocampus and lateral occipital cortex are engaged in learning visual regularities. However, it remains unclear whether VSL on temporal duration unlinked to object identity is represented in brain regions involved in VSL and object recognition or in those involved in time perception without sensory cortex involvement.

Introduction: are commonly found in intramammary infections associated with bovine subclinical mastitis in dairy cattle, yet their genomic diversity and antimicrobial resistance dynamics remain poorly characterized, particularly in African settings.
Methods: This study presents a comparative genomic analysis of 17 isolates from South Africa, including five newly sequenced bovine mastitis strains and twelve porcine-derived genomes retrieved from GenBank. analysis using multilocus sequence typing (MLST), virulence genes, antibiotic resistance genes and plasmids replicon types were used to characterise these isolates.
