Article Abstract

Date palm fruit seed ( L.) extract (DSE), an under-utilized resource, is a rich source of polyphenols with high potency for disease prevention and antioxidative activities. For the first time, the present study demonstrated that DSE inhibits labile iron activity and DNA and BSA damage and inhibits acetylcholinesterase and tyrosinase activities. Moreover, DSE reduces the proliferation of hepatic, colorectal, and breast cancer cells dose-dependently through apoptotic mechanisms. Furthermore, DSE significantly suppressed the expression of both BCl-2 and P21 genes and increased the P53 expression level when compared with the untreated cells and the 5-FU treated cells. These findings suggest a strong potential for DSE in protecting against the iron-catalyzed ferroptosis that results in programmed cell death. The results also confirm the efficacy of DSE against cancer cells. Therefore, DSE constitutes a valuable candidate for developing functional foods and for natural compound-based chemotherapy for the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries.

The deadly drink: Nipah virus transmission through date palm sap, cultural practices and the evolution of behavioral interventions in Bangladesh over two decades.

J Infect Public Health

August 2025

Infectious Diseases Division, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), Dhaka, Bangladesh; Pandemic Sciences Institute, Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford, UK. Electronic address:

Nipah virus (NiV) has emerged as a significant public health threat, with recurring outbreaks in Bangladesh often linked to the consumption of raw date palm sap contaminated by fruit bats (Pteropus species). Over the past two decades, substantial efforts have been made to understand the cultural context of sap consumption, promoting behavior change and developing interventions to prevent NiV spillover. Despite these efforts, achieving sustainable change in sap consumption practices remains challenging due to deep-seated cultural practices, community perceptions of sap consumption, habitual behaviors, limited awareness of health risks and economic barriers.

Ras cheese, a hard cheese typically consumed in the Middle East after a 6-month ripening period, is a rich source of casein. Microbial enzymes are commonly used to develop its distinct flavor, but plant-based enzymes offer a cost-effective alternative. Kiwi fruit and heart of date palm slurries contain substantial levels of protease activity, measured at 77.

This study was conducted during the 2024 growing season at the Palm Research Station in Al-Zafaraniya, Baghdad, Iraq. A total of 54 uniform date palm trees (Khastawi and Khadhrawi cultivars), approximately 15 years old and planted at 10-m spacing, were selected for experimental treatments. The objective was to evaluate the effects of three concentrations of nano NPK fertilizer (0, 2, and 4 g·L), applied in six foliar doses, and three concentrations of potassium silicate (0, 2, and 4 mL·L), applied in four foliar doses, as well as their interaction, on date yield, and fruit quality.

Background: Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is a vital fruit crop cultivated in hot, arid regions due to its economic, nutritional, and ecological significance. Understanding the morphological diversity among different genotypes is crucial for breeding, conservation, and improving yield potential.
