Article Abstract

Here, we report a simple and general approach to fabricate free-standing two-dimensional (2D) sheets of nanoparticles by the simultaneous self-assembly of hydrophobic nanoparticles and hydrophilic polymers at the liquid-liquid interface. The nanoparticle-polymer interaction at the interface generates well-defined 2D sheets of densely packed nanoparticles with a lateral dimension of tens of micrometers. The nanosheets transferred in water are stable over months without any additional cross-linking step. The method is applicable for a broad range of nanoparticles including oxide, semiconductor, and metal nanoparticles as well as functional polymers.

Bimorph Soft Actuators Based on Isostructural Heterogeneous Janus Films.

ACS Nano

September 2025

State Key Laboratory of Flexible Electronics (LoFE) & Institute of Advanced Materials (IAM), Nanjing University of Posts & Telecommunications, 9 Wenyuan Road, Nanjing 210023, China.

Bimorph soft actuators, traditionally composed of two materials with distinct responses to external stimuli, often face durability challenges due to structural incompatibility. Here, we propose an alternative design employing free-standing, isostructural heterogeneous Janus (IHJ) films that harmonize stability with high actuation efficiency. These IHJ films were fabricated through a vacuum self-assembly process, consisting of TiCT MXene nanosheets and hybrid graphene oxide (GO)-biomass bacterial cellulose (BC), with a well-matched two-dimensional lattice structure.

Ion irradiation has routinely been used to create defects or even pattern two-dimensional (2D) materials. For efficient defect engineering, that is, choosing the proper ion fluence to achieve the desired concentration of defects, it is of paramount importance to know the probability of creating defects as a function of ion energy. Atomistic simulations of ion impacts on 2D targets can provide such information, especially for free-standing systems, but in the case of supported 2D materials, the substrate can strongly affect defect production.

Controllable growth of MoO dielectrics with sub-1 nm equivalent oxide thickness for 2D electronics.

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Chip and Integration Technology, School of Electronic Science and Engineering (School of Microelectronics), South China Normal University, Foshan, PR China.

The integration of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with high-κ dielectrics is critical for the development of post-silicon electronics. The key challenge lies in developing an ultra-thin high-κ dielectric with damage-free interface and sub-1 nm equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) for further continuation of Moore's law. Here we report the thickness-controlled free-standing growth of layered MoO dielectrics with EOT down to 0.

Atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters for engineering self-assembled two-dimensional materials.

Dalton Trans

Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Tampere University, FI-33720, Tampere, Finland.

Two-dimensional nanomaterials derived from noble metals exhibit unique optoelectronic properties with potential applications in advanced nanodevices, catalysis, imaging, biomedicine, and sensing. Over the years, atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters have emerged as promising building blocks for self-assembled discrete and hierarchical colloidal superstructures. Various approaches, including templated growth, air-water interfaces, and non-covalent interactions between surface ligand functional groups, have been utilized to promote the self-assembly of nanoclusters.

Anisotropic thermal transport was measured in imine-linked two-dimensional polymer (2DP) films that were prepared by interfacial polymerization. Measurements of both in-plane () and cross-plane () thermal conductivities relied on preparing free-standing 2DP films that were readily transferred for different measurement configurations. We polymerized two 2DP (Per-PDA and TAPPy-PDA) films at a liquid-liquid interface.
