Article Abstract

The unregulated usage of Cephalexin (CFX) in animal source food products has led to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in humans. Graphene quantum dots (GQD) are zero-dimensional nanomaterials possessing both unique optical and electrical propertiesbased on their tuneable size that serves as an excellent signal enhancer. The fluorescence quenching and conductive properties of GQD were exploited for the detection of CFX. In this study, a zero-length conjugation approach was utilized to develop Cephalexin-Bovine Serum Albumin (CFX-BSA) conjugate and used to develop antibodies (Ab). Conjugated CFX-BSA Abs with GQD enhanced the electrochemical response of the sensor for sensitive detection of CFX. The fabricated electrode was optimised by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The limit of detection for CFX was found to be 0.53 fM in standard buffer with negligible cross-reactivity against other β-lactam antibiotics. The biofunctionalized electrode based on GQD-antibody may potentially be miniaturised for on-site detection of other antibiotics in food samples.

Dongzhai Harbor Mangrove forest, which is one of the largest mangrove forests in China, is currently contaminated by antibiotics from aquaculture and human activities in the vicinity. However, insufficient research has been conducted on antibiotic pollution in Dongzhai Harbor, which could affect the antibiotic pollution levels in the mangrove forest. In this study, the occurrence, distribution and risk assessment of 37 antibiotics in the seawater and sediment of Dongzhai Harbor were analyzed.

Objectives: Cervical cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), accounting for nearly 85% of the global cervical cancer burden. High-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) infection is the main cause of cervical cancer. Easy-to-use, rapid, scalable, high-throughput, and cost-effective HPV tests are urgently needed for low-resource settings.

The removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics from wastewater continues to pose significant challenges, as conventional treatment methods often prove ineffective against these persistent pollutants. However, microalgal-mediated treatment has emerged as a promising alternative, leveraging its unique potential to degrade recalcitrant contaminants. This study investigates the removal of enrofloxacin (EFX) and ciprofloxacin (CFX) by Chlorella pyrenoidosa, integrating transcriptomics, gene network analysis, and co-metabolic pathways to unravel the mechanisms driving pollutant degradation.

Cephalosporin antibiotics (CFs) with ionizable groups (-COOH and -NH) are widely detected as emerging micropollutants that pose potential environmental risks to aquatic systems, but few studies have revealed their multivariate photochemical transformation behavior in sunlight-irradiated surface waters. In this study, the apparent photodegradation, photo-oxidation towards reactive oxygen species (ROS, •OH and O), and photo-modified toxicity were investigated for the four ionizable CFs: cefoxitin (CFX), cephalothin (CEF), cefoperazone (CFP) and cefazolin (CFZ). Under simulated sunlight irradiation (λ > 290 nm), their multivariate photo-transformation kinetics varied as a function of pHs and the dominant protonated states of the CF in question (HCFs, HCFs and CFs).

Article Synopsis
  • Antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, and Tobramycin are widely used but can lead to antibiotic resistance when their residues enter the environment.
  • Traditional monitoring methods for these antibiotics, such as LC-MS, are costly and complex, while nanoscale field-effect transistors (FETs) offer quick and sensitive alternatives but struggle with consistency in performance.
  • The study presents an innovative approach using thermally reduced graphene oxide FETs on printed circuit boards, achieving ultra-sensitive detection of antibiotics at femtomolar levels with machine learning, enabling effective monitoring of water contamination.
