The strategic design of the cathode is a critical feature for high-performance and long-lasting reversibility of an energy storage system. In particular, the round-trip efficiency and cycling performance of nonaqueous lithium-oxygen batteries are governed by minimizing the discharge products, such as LiO and LiO. Recently, a metal-organic framework has been directly pyrolyzed into a carbon frame with controllable pore volume and size. Furthermore, selective metallic catalysts can also be obtained by adjusting metal ions for outstanding electrochemical reactions. In this study, various bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived carbons were designed by varying the ratio of Zn to Co ions. Moreover, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are added to improve the electrical conductivity further, ultimately leading to better electrochemical stability in the cathode. As a result, the optimized bimetallic ZIF-carbon/CNT composite exhibits a high discharge capacity of 16,000 mAh·g, with a stable cycling performance of up to 137 cycles. This feature is also beneficial for lowering the overpotential of the cathode during cycling, even at the high current density of 2,000 mA·g.

Carbonized wood has great potential as a self-supported electrode for energy storage/conversion applications. However, developing efficient and economical bifunctional electrodes by customizing the surface structure remains a challenge. This study proposes a novel multifunctional electrode design strategy, using N/P co-doped carbonized wood (NPCW) as carriers and in situ grows copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) as nucleation centers to induce vertical growth of CuCo-layered double hydroxid (LDH) nanosheets along the substrate.

Electrochemical nitrogen fixation-a sustainable pathway for converting abundant N into NH using renewable energy-holds transformative potential for revolutionizing artificial nitrogen cycles. Nevertheless, even the state-of-the-art catalytic systems also suffer from inadequate N adsorption capacity, which critically limits ammonia production rates and Faradaic efficiency (FE). To overcome this bottleneck, we strategically leveraged the antiferroelectric properties of SnO to establish dipole-dipole interactions with N molecules, synergistically enhancing both N adsorption and activation kinetics.

The Mediterranean Basin, a hotspot for tomato production, is one of the most vulnerable areas to climate change, where rising temperatures and increasing soil and water salinization represent major threats to agricultural sustainability. Thus, to understand the molecular mechanisms behind plant responses to this stress combination, an RNA-Seq analysis was conducted on roots and shoots of tomato plants exposed to salt (100 mM NaCl) and/or heat (42°C, 4 h each day) stress for 21 days. The analysis identified over 8000 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) under combined stress conditions, with 1716 DEGs in roots and 2665 in shoots being exclusively modulated in response to this specific stress condition.

Enhancement of the performance of lithium-ion batteries is a critical strategy for addressing the challenges associated with cost and raw materials. By doping boron (B), aluminum (Al), and aluminum/boron (Al/B) utilizing the sol-gel method, we demonstrate a substantial improvement in the cycling performance of Ni-rich lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) as an electrode. While the initial specific capacitance of the doped samples may be lower than that of the pristine NMC, these samples demonstrate a notable increase in specific capacitance during subsequent cycles, reaching a peak around the 10 cycle and nearing the highest specific capacitance observed in NMC cathodes.

Developing solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, a high voltage window, low flammability, and excellent interface compatibilities with both the anode and cathode for lithium-metal batteries is still a great challenge but highly desirable. Herein, we achieve this target through an in situ copolymerization of vinyl ethylene carbonate (VEC) together with acrylonitrile (AN) under fitting ratios inside a porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber membrane doped with flame-retardant decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) molecules. The received fiber-reinforced polycarbonate-based composite electrolyte with an ultrathin thickness of 13 μm exhibits good internal interfacial compatibility because of the same AN structure and superior flame-retardant performance due to the doped DBDPE molecules.
