Microalgae are photoautotrophic microorganisms known as producers of a large variety of metabolites. The taxonomic diversity of these microorganisms has been poorly explored. In this study, a newly isolated strain was identified based on the 18S rRNA encoding gene. The phylogenetic analysis showed that the isolated strain was affiliated with the genus. This genus has greatly attracted scientific attention according to its capacity to produce a large variety of metabolites, including phycoerythrin. Growth and phycoerythrin production conditions were optimized using a Plackett-Burman design and response surface methodology. An expression profile analysis of the gene, encoding the beta subunit of phycoerythrin, was performed by qRT-PCR under standard and optimized culture conditions. The optimization process showed that maximum cell abundance was achieved under the following conditions: CaCl = 2.1328 g/L, metal solution = 1 mL/L, pH = 7 and light intensity = 145 μmol photons/m/s, whereas maximum phycoerythrin production level occurred when CaCl = 1.8467 g/L, metal solution = 1 mL/L, pH = 7 and light intensity = 157 μmol/m/s. In agreement, positive transcriptional regulation of the gene was demonstrated using qRT-PCR. This study showed the successful optimization of abiotic conditions for highest growth and phycoerythrin production, making sp. suitable for several biotechnological applications.

Autotrophic picoplankton are integral to marine ecosystems, contributing nearly half of oceanic primary productivity, particularly in warm, oligotrophic regions. Given that subsurface chlorophyll maxima (SCM) account for over 80 % of depth-integrated primary production, this study aimed to explore the variations in picophytoplankton community composition at the SCM under dynamic environmental conditions in the Northern Indian Ocean, using flow cytometry and chemotaxonomy. We found that picophytoplankton dominated the SCM (∼60 %), with picochlorophytes being the most prevalent group (∼50 %).

Phycobiliprotein is an important co-pigment in photosynthesis, which is composed of the covalent combination of apoprotein and phycobilin. Biliverdin IXα and phycoerythrobilin are both important substances in the phycobiliprotein biosynthesis pathway. As an economic red seaweed, has a high content of phycoerythrin.

The isolation of functional bioactive compounds from microalgae as sustainable sources has emerged as a new area of focus in pharmacology and functional food research. The use of natural ingredients in food products has become very popular today, while desserts made with preservatives and artificial colors have been shown to significantly increase the risk of cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to extract phycoerythrin (PE) from the cyanobacterium Nostoc sp.
