Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) arise from one (or a combination) of two basic generation mechanisms in the cochlea: nonlinear distortion and linear reflection. As a result of having distinct generation processes, these two classes of emissions may provide non-redundant information about hair-cell integrity and show distinct sensitivities to cochlear pathology. Here, we characterize the relationship between reflection and distortion emissions in normal hearers across a broad frequency and stimulus-level space using novel analysis techniques. Furthermore, we illustrate the promise of this approach in a small group of individuals with mild-moderate hearing loss. A "joint-OAE profile" was created by measuring interleaved swept-tone stimulus-frequency OAEs (SFOAEs) and 2f-f distortion-product OAEs (DPOAEs) in the same ears using well-considered parameters. OAE spectra and input/output functions were calculated across five octaves. Using our specific recording protocol and analysis scheme, SFOAEs in normal hearers had higher levels than did DPOAEs, with the most pronounced differences occurring at the highest stimulus levels. Also, SFOAE compression occurred at higher stimulus levels (than did DPOAE compression) and its growth in the compressed region was steeper. The diagnostic implications of these findings and the influence of the measurement protocol on both OAEs (and on their relationship) are discussed.

The transition from traditional animal-based approaches and assessments to New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) marks a scientific revolution in regulatory toxicology, with the potential of enhancing human and environmental protection. However, implementing the effective use of NAMs in regulatory toxicology has proven to be challenging, and so far, efforts to facilitate this change frequently focus on singular technical, psychological or economic inhibitors. This article takes a system-thinking approach to these challenges, a holistic framework for describing interactive relationships between the components of a system of interest.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition associated with altered resting-state brain function. An increased excitation-inhibition ratio is discussed as a pathomechanism but in-vivo evidence of disturbed neurotransmission underlying functional alterations remains scarce. We compare local resting-state brain activity and neurotransmitter co-localizations between autism (N = 405, N = 395) and neurotypical controls (N = 473, N = 474) in two independent cohorts and correlate them with excitation-inhibition changes induced by glutamatergic (ketamine) and GABAergic (midazolam) medication.

Poetry writing can serve as a means for personal expression of feelings, thoughts, and attitudes toward various subjects, as well as for a deeper understanding of lived experiences and identity. The present study examined the aging experiences of men over the age of 70 (N = 15), living in a continuing care retirement community in Israel, as reflected in the poems they wrote. The poems were analyzed using latent content analysis, resulting in a typology of three types of poems: a) Preparation for end-of-life poems, b) Positive aging poems, and c) Nostalgic poems.

Parasites can induce gene expression changes in their hosts, either benefiting the parasite or the host. In particular, trematodes are not only one of the most ubiquitous groups of aquatic parasites, they also have huge impacts on individual hosts with significant ecological and economic repercussions. The trematode Bucephalus minimus infects Cerastoderma edule (the edible cockle), a socioeconomically and ecologically important bivalve, as its first intermediate host.
