Article Abstract

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been shown to improve motor learning in numerous studies. However, only a few of these studies have been conducted on elite-level performers or in complex motor tasks that have been practiced extensively. The purpose was to determine the influence of tDCS applied to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on motor learning over multiple days on 10-m air rifle shooting performance in elite Deaflympic athletes. Two male and two female elite Deaflympic athletes (World, European, and National medalists) participated in this case series. The study utilized a randomized, double-blind, SHAM-controlled, cross-over design. Anodal tDCS or SHAM stimulation was applied to the left DLPFC for 25 min with a current strength of 2 mA concurrent with three days of standard shooting practice sessions. Shooting performance was quantified as the points and the endpoint error. Separate 2 (DLPFC-tDCS, SHAM) × 3 (1,2,3) within-subjects ANOVAs revealed no significant main effects or interactions for either points or endpoint error. These results indicate that DLPFC-tDCS applied over multiple days does not improve shooting performance in elite athletes. Different stimulation parameters or very long-term (weeks/months) application of tDCS may be needed to improve motor learning in elite athletes.

Background: Structured data codes capture acute bodily injury from firearm violence but do not necessarily describe follow-up care from bodily injury and secondary exposure to firearm violence (eg, witnessing a shooting, being threatened by a firearm, or losing a loved one to gun violence and injury from firearms) even though such exposure is associated with many short- and long-term health impacts. Clinical notes from electronic health records (EHRs) often contain data not otherwise captured in structured data fields and can be categorized using natural language processing (NLP).

Objective: This study protocol outlines the steps being taken to develop an NLP text classifier for determination of exposure to firearm violence (both primary and secondary exposure) from ambulatory primary care and behavioral health EHR clinical notes for persons aged ≥5 years.

The analysis of box-score performance indicators has traditionally been used to classify player roles in women's basketball based on the five conventional positions: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. However, this framework may not reflect the current tactical and functional demands of the game. The aim of this study was to identify and redefine functional player roles in professional women's basketball using performance data derived from actual competition.

Background: Motor competence (MC) plays a fundamental role in physical development and the acquisition of complex motor skills during early childhood. Moreover, the type of instructional method can significantly influence both the trajectory and the quality of this learning process. Accordingly, the present study aimed to examine the role of MC in learning the futsal shooting skill under three different instructional approaches, Linear Pedagogy (LP), Nonlinear Pedagogy (NLP), and Differential Learning (DL), in preschool children.
