Article Abstract

Objective: To explore the time-effect relationship of long snake moxibustion in intervening recurrent exopathogenic diseases of patients with yang-deficiency constitution in different moxibustion periods and provide a scientific basis for the selection of long snake moxibustion in preventing and treating recurrent exopathogenic diseases of patients with yang-deficiency constitution.

Methods: Ninety patients with yang-deficiency constitution who met the inclusion criteria of recurrent exopathogenic diseases were randomly divided into a 30 min group, a 60 min group, and a 90 min group, with 30 cases in each group. Long snake moxibustion was applied once a week from Dazhui (GV14) to Yaoshu (GV2) for different periods (30, 60, and 90 min), 12 times (12 weeks) in total. The scores of yang-deficiency constitution quality scale and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) before treatment, after treatment, and six months after treatment, as well as attack times of exopathogenic diseases within one year before treatment and after treatment in the three groups, were observed and recorded.

Results: After treatment and 6 months after treatment, the yang-deficiency quality scale scores and FSS scores of the three groups were lower than those before treatment (<0.01), which decreased in the sequence of the 30 min group, the 90 min group, and the 60 min group (<0.05). Within one year after treatment, the attack times of exopathogenic diseases in the three groups was lower than that within one year before treatment (<0.01), which decreased in the sequence of the 30 min group, the 90 min group, and the 60 min group (<0.05).

Conclusion: The optimal moxibustion time of long snake moxibustion on the recurrent exopathogenic diseases of patients with yang-deficiency constitution is 60 min.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to determine the effectiveness of long snake moxibustion on patients with yang-deficiency constitution who suffer from recurrent exopathogenic diseases, by analyzing different durations of treatment (30, 60, and 90 minutes).
  • Ninety patients were randomly assigned to three groups, receiving moxibustion once a week for 12 weeks, and their health metrics were recorded before and after treatment.
  • Results showed significant improvement in health scores and reduced frequency of diseases, with the 60-minute session being the most effective treatment duration.

Shang han bai zheng ge (Poets of Syndromes of Exo-pathogenic Cold Disease), Shang han fa wei lun (Discourse on Elucidation of Exo-pathogenic Cold Disease), Shang han jiu shi lun (90 Discourses on Exo-pathogenic Cold Disease) were the three extant books on exo-pathogenic cold disease written by Xu Shuwei among his other works of its kind. Although there were carved editions of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, these books were gradually paid attention for citations by other physicians till the Qing Dynasty. Through comparison of its texts, it can be found that the title of Shang han bai zheng ge was mentioned in his other medical works.

Xu Shuwei's Pu ji ben shi fang (Moxibustion in Prescription for Universal Relief) was carved for several times and disseminated to Hubei, Hunan, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Fujian, Sichuan Provinces and the areas under the rule of the Jin ethnic minority group. While Shang han bai zheng ge (Poets of Syndrome of Exo-pathogenic Cold disease), Shang han fa wei lun (Discourse on Elucidation of Exo-pathogenic Cold Disease), and Shang han jiu shi lun (90 Discourses on Exo-pathogenic Disease) were scarcely carved or spread in its copying form with very limited distribution. Hence, Pu ji ben shi fang exerts greater influence in the Southern Song Dynasty.

The vulgar form of the Chinese character Tuan is printed as "[symbol: see text]" which is quite similar to Bo in its form. In the Zhao Kaimei's version of Shanhan Lun (Treatise of Exopathogenic Cold Disease) and the version of Qianjin Yifang (A Supplement to Recipes Worth a Thousand Gold) of Dade reign of the Yuan Dynasty all set this character either in the vulgar form or in its full form of "[symbol: see test]". Whereas, in the last century, this character in all the modern printing versions and computerized version of Shanhan Lun and Jingui Yaolue are mistakenly printed either in its vulgar form or in its full form.
