This study compared the accuracy of a new MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry system, ASTA MicroIDSys system, with that of MALDI Biotyper system for the identification of reference and clinical bacterial and yeast strains. The identification accuracy of the 2 systems was compared using a total of 406 strains comprising 142 aerobic and 180 anaerobic bacterial strains and 84 yeast strains. The genus and species identification rates were 98.0% and 89.4% using MicroIDSys and 96.1% and 89.4% using Biotyper, respectively. The species identification rates of MicroIDSys and Biotyper for aerobic bacteria were 93.0% and 97.2%, respectively, and those for anaerobic bacteria were 85.6% and 81.7%, respectively. The accuracy of yeast identification at the species level was 91.7% using MicroIDSys and 92.9% using Biotyper. These findings indicate that MicroIDSys could be useful for the accurate identification of bacteria and yeast in clinical microbiology laboratories.

We have developed the methylotrophic yeast Ogataea minuta as a useful host for producing heterologous proteins. In this study, a double mutant that lacks the Prb1 protease and alcohol oxidase was generated and applied for heterologous protein production. Upon our optimization of the fermentation conditions, such as feeding of carbon and nitrogen sources and pH control, this mutant showed increased production of human serum albumin, resulting in a yield of approximately 7.

The biting midges, Culicoides peregrinus Kieffer and Culicoides oxystoma Kieffer (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are the most significant vector species of bluetongue virus (BTV) in the Oriental region, including India. Rearing of these vector species was cumbersome; previous researchers supplemented the rearing substrates primarily with cattle dung (the habitat), yeast and nutrient broth. Other investigations reiterated that an enriched milieu of live bacteria is required for the oviposition and developmental progression of the immatures as they failed to develop in sterile medium.

Sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) of the rRNA gene repeat, and the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene, showed that they belong to the and genera of the order , but they did not exactly match any known species.
