Article Abstract

Metallic materials with unique surface structure have attracted much attention due to their unique physical and chemical properties. However, it is hard to prepare bulk metallic materials with special crystal faces, especially at the nanoscale. Herein, we report an efficient method to adjust the surface structure of a Cu plate which combines ion implantation technology with the oxidation-etching process. The large number of vacancies generated by ion implantation induced the electrochemical oxidation of several atomic layers in depth; after chemical etching, the Cu(100) planes were exposed on the surface of the Cu plate. As a catalyst for acid hydrogen evolution reaction, the Cu plate with (100) planes merely needs 273 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA/cm because the high-energy (100) surface has moderate hydrogen adsorption and desorption capability. This work provides an appealing strategy to engineer the surface structure of bulk metallic materials and improve their catalytic properties.

Associations between element mixtures and biomarkers of pathophysiologic pathways related to autism spectrum disorder.

J Trace Elem Med Biol

September 2025

Department of Neurology, Children's Hospital of Fudan University, National Children's Medical Center, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Objective: We previously documented that exposure to a spectrum of elements is associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, there is a lack of mechanistic understanding as to how elemental mixtures contribute to the ASD development.

Materials And Methods: Serum and urinary concentrations of 26 elements and six biomarkers of ASD-relevant pathophysiologic pathways including serum HIPK 2, serum p53 protein, urine malondialdehyde (MDA), urine 8-OHdG, serum melatonin, and urine carnitine, were measured in 21 ASD cases and 21 age-matched healthy controls of children aged 6-12 years.

Ultra-High Zinc Utilization Enabled by MXene Anode for Flexible Dual-Plating Zn-Br Microbatteries.

J Phys Chem Lett

September 2025

College of Materials Science and Engineering, Sichuan University, No. 24 South Section 1, Yihuan Road, Chengdu 610065, P. R. China.

Aqueous zinc-ion microbatteries exhibit promising prospects for wearable devices due to their high safety and cost-effectiveness but face challenges such as low energy density and short cycle life. To address these challenges, a dual-plating flexible Zn-Br microbattery was developed using freestanding MXene films as a zinc metal free anode. The MXene anode retains no redundant Zn, as Zn from the electrolyte undergoes deposition/stripping reactions on its substrate, thereby eliminating the necessity for excess zinc.

Precise Modulation of Zeolite Acidity by Alkali Metal Ions for Enhancing Catalytic Performance in CO Cycloaddition Reactions.

September 2025

State Key Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Preparative Chemistry, College of Chemistry, Jilin University, Changchun 130021, P. R. China.

The CO cycloaddition route is an effective way to achieve efficient conversion and utilization of CO. Zeolites with diverse topologies and tunable acidic sites can efficiently promote the cycloaddition reaction of CO with epoxides. The exchangeable cations in zeolites have a great influence on the performance of the CO cycloaddition, but there are few studies on it.

Co and CoPc Molecular Kondo Box on Gold Surface.

Phys Rev Lett

August 2025

Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, Anhui 230026, China.

We demonstrate a class of Co and CoPc molecular Kondo boxes on the Au(111) surface through scanning tunneling microscopy experiments and first-principles calculations. The π-electron states of the CoPc molecule hybridize with the conduction electron states of the Au(111) substrate, imparting itinerantlike electron characteristics. Because of the high symmetry matching between the d_{π} orbitals of Co adatoms and the π orbitals of CoPc, the large orbital overlap predominates the formation of a Kondo singlet within the molecular complexes that prevail over the competition from the metal substrate, enabling them effectively as the molecular Kondo boxes.
