Left atrium (LA) size is associated with adverse cardiovascular events. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of LA enlargement measured by non-contrast CT (NCCT) with traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Individuals aged 60-75 years from the population-based multicentre Danish Cardiovascular Screening (DANCAVAS) trial were included in this cross-sectional study. The LA was manually traced on the NCCT scans, and the largest cross-section area was indexed to body surface area. All traditional risk factors were recorded, and a subgroup received an echocardiographic examination. We enrolled 14,987 individuals. Participants with known cardiovascular disease or lacking measurements of LA size or body surface area were excluded, resulting in 10,902 men for the main analysis and 616 women for a sensitivity analysis. Adjusted multivariable analysis showed a significantly increased indexed LA size by increasing age and pulse pressure, while smoking, HbA1c, and total cholesterol were associated with decreased indexed LA size. The findings were confirmed in a supplementary analysis including left ventricle ejection fraction and mass. In this population-based cohort of elderly men, an association was found between age and pulse pressure and increasing LA size. Surprisingly, smoking, HbA1c, and total cholesterol were associated with a decrease in LA size. This indicates that the pathophysiology behind atrial cardiomyopathy is not only reflected by enlargement, but also shrinking.

Background: Recent trials of large core thrombectomy have shown that our traditional understanding of infarct characteristics and reperfusion benefit may be incomplete for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) has wide inter-rater variability, and modern studies have also shown that reperfusion therapies can benefit some patients regardless of the ASPECTS. Reproducible imaging metrics that account for the degree of hypo-attenuation on non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) may be better suited to guide treatments.

Background: Previous studies have shown improved image quality in pediatric cardiac imaging using photon-counting detector CT (PCDCT). However, these studies did not evaluate image quality and radiation dose when utilizing the full spectral capabilities of PCDCT scanners. The full spectral capability of PCDCT scanners allows the generation of the entire array of mono-energetic reconstructions, virtual non-contrast (VNC) images, and iodine maps, which have potential advantages in evaluating complex congenital heart disease.

Objective: To develop a novel scoring system-the Stone Impaction Risk Score (SIRS)-based on non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) parameters for preoperative prediction of impacted ureteral stones, and to compare its diagnostic accuracy with three established models: the Impacted Stone Formula (ISF), Wang nomogram, and Qi nomogram.
Methods: A total of 466 adult patients who underwent ureteroscopy for solitary ureteral stones measuring 5-10 mm between January 2019 and January 2025 were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 233 patients with impacted stones were matched 1:1 with 233 non-impacted controls.

The role of different imaging modalities-non-contrast CT (NCCT), CT perfusion (CTP), and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)-in selecting patients with large-core stroke for endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is a subject of ongoing debate. This study aims to determine whether patients with large-core acute ischemic stroke (AIS) undergoing EVT triaged with CTP or DWI in addition to NCCT had different clinical outcomes compared to those only triaged with NCCT. We queried the Stroke Thrombectomy and Aneurysm Registry (STAR) for patients enrolled between 2014 and 2023 who presented with anterior-circulation AIS and large ischemic core (ASPECTS < 6) who underwent EVT in 41 stroke centers in the USA, Europe, Asia, and South America.
