We demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the restricted open-shell and unrestricted formulation of the absolutely localized Huzinaga projection operator embedding method. Restricted open-shell and unrestricted Huzinaga projection embedding in the full system basis is formally exact to restricted open-shell and unrestricted Kohn-Sham density functional theory, respectively. By utilizing the absolutely localized basis, we significantly improve the efficiency of the method while maintaining high accuracy. Furthermore, the absolutely localized basis allows for high accuracy open-shell wave function methods to be embedded into a closed-shell density functional theory environment. The open-shell embedding method is shown to calculate electronic energies of a variety of systems to within 1 kcal/mol accuracy of the full system wave function result. For certain highly localized reactions, such as spin transition energies on transition metals, we find that very few atoms are necessary to include in the wave function region in order to achieve the desired accuracy. This extension further broadens the applicability of our absolutely localized Huzinaga level-shift projection operator method to include open-shell species. Here, we apply our method to several representative examples, such as spin splitting energies, catalysis on transition metals, and radical reactions.

Macrolide esterases, which are preponderant drug-inactivating enzymes present inside drug-resistant bacteria, pose a significant threat to the realm of macrolide antibiotics. They dissect the antibiotic's macrolactone ring structure by hydrolyzing the ester moiety, consequently diminishing the antimicrobial efficacy in treating bacterial infections. Motivated by the recently resolved crystallographic structure of an important member of the macrolide esterase - 'Erythromycin Esterase C (EreC)' - we have delved into the catalytic itineraries of the erythromycin hydrolysis utilizing QM/MM methods.

The major bacterial pathogen (Group A or Strep A) recruits the negative regulator of the alternative complement pathway factor H (FH) to its surface. Antigenically sequence variable regions of several Strep A M proteins, including M5 and M6, bind FH but have no obvious sequence homology. A second Strep A surface-localized protein, FbaA, binds FH through a purported coiled-coil region, suggesting mimicry of the well-known coiled coil of M proteins.

The discovery of linear scaling relations has fundamentally changed the field of heterogeneous catalysis. The scaling relations have been rationalized based on the d-band theory, specifically a separation of sp and d electron contributions to adsorption energies. Within the framework of energy decomposition analysis, a full understanding of such a separation would require one to further break down the adsorption energy into distinct energy components such as electrostatics, polarization, charge transfer, and van der Waals interactions, and to examine the sp and d contributions to each of them.

Case Presentation: A 36-year-old woman was given a local infiltration anesthetic, and then a 22G sharp needle with an empty syringe was utilized to puncture several times near the subcutaneous tissue to form a tunnel. When we squeezed the tunnel, there was no bleeding, and then the needle was replaced by a 22G dull needle.
