Article Abstract

NASA's New Horizons mission unveiled a diverse landscape of Pluto's surface with massive regions being neutral in color, while others like Cthulhu Macula range from golden-yellow to reddish comprising up to half of Pluto's carbon budget. Here, we demonstrate in laboratory experiments merged with electronic structure calculations that the photolysis of solid acetylene - the most abundant precipitate on Pluto's surface - by low energy ultraviolet photons efficiently synthesizes benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons excited state photochemistry thus providing critical molecular building blocks for the colored surface material. Since low energy photons deliver doses to Pluto's surface exceeding those from cosmic rays by six orders of magnitude, these processes may significantly contribute to the coloration of Pluto's surface and of hydrocarbon-covered surfaces of Solar System bodies such as Triton in general. This discovery critically enhances our perception of the distribution of aromatic molecules and carbon throughout our Solar System.

Comparative stabilization mechanism of self-assembling fattigated gelatin, micellar polyethylene glycol hexadecyl ether, and electrostatic interactive xanthan gum for aqueous labile decitabine.

Decitabine (DCB) is very unstable in aqueous solutions because of the opening of the N-5 and C-6 aza-ring. The objective of this study was to investigate a stabilization mechanism of aqueous-labile decitabine (DCB) with three different materials by preparing binary spray dried powders (SDs): self-assembling fattigated gelatin-oleic acid conjugate (GOC), micellar polyethylene glycol hexadecyl ether (Brij® 58), nonionic surfactant and electrostatically interactive xanthan gum (XA), an anionic polysaccharide. GOC was synthesized by covalently conjugating oleic acid with gelatin.

Long-term controlled release with reduced initial burst release utilizing calcium ion-triggering nanoaggregates of pasireotide-loaded fattigated albumin nanoparticles.

The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term controlled release of peptide-loaded fattigated albumin nanoparticles via calcium ion-triggering nanoaggregation with minimal initial burst release. Fattigated albumin nanoparticles were prepared via sonication by the self-assembly of human serum albumin (HSA)-oleic acid conjugates (AOC) with three different substitution ratios of oleic acid (OA) to modulate hydrophobicity. Then, pasireotide pamoate (PAS) as a model peptide was encapsulated into the hydrophobic core of HSA-OA nanoparticles (PAS-AONs).

Article Synopsis
  • - Charon, Pluto's largest moon, has been studied for its composition and changes caused by radiation, but previous spectral data only covered wavelengths below 2.5 μm, leaving some questions unanswered.
  • - Recent observations using JWST have detected carbon dioxide (CO) and hydrogen peroxide (HO) on Charon's northern hemisphere, adding to its known chemical components like water ice and ammonia.
  • - The presence of HO suggests active processes affecting the water ice surface, while spectral analysis indicates that CO is mainly found in crystalline form, likely originating from subsurface sources and other processes involving hydrocarbons and solar interactions.

Triton and Pluto are believed to share a common origin, both forming initially in the Kuiper Belt but Triton being later captured by Neptune. Both objects display similar sizes, densities, and atmospheric and surface ice composition, with the presence of volatile ices N, CH, and CO. Yet their appearance, including their surface albedo and ice distribution strongly differ.

LAG-3 and PD-1 synergize on CD8 T cells to drive T cell exhaustion and hinder autocrine IFN-γ-dependent anti-tumor immunity.

Overcoming immune-mediated resistance to PD-1 blockade remains a major clinical challenge. Enhanced efficacy has been demonstrated in melanoma patients with combined nivolumab (anti-PD-1) and relatlimab (anti-LAG-3) treatment, the first in its class to be FDA approved. However, how these two inhibitory receptors synergize to hinder anti-tumor immunity remains unknown.
