Article Abstract

We report valence band photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of gas-phase and liquid-phase benzene as well as those of benzene dissolved in liquid ammonia, complemented by electronic structure calculations. The origins of the sizable gas-to-liquid-phase shifts in electron binding energies deduced from the benzene valence band spectral features are quantitatively characterized in terms of the Born-Haber solvation model. This model also allows to rationalize the observation of almost identical shifts in liquid ammonia and benzene despite the fact that the former solvent is polar while the latter is not. For neutral solutes like benzene, it is the electronic polarization response determined by the high frequency dielectric constant of the solvent, which is practically the same in the two liquids, that primarily determines the observed gas-to-liquid shifts.

In ammonia synthesis, a new reaction system that does not use hydrogen (H) as a raw material, such as the plasma/liquid (P/L) reaction, contributes to creating a sustainable chemical industry. The P/L reaction is intended to abstract hydrogen atoms from water molecules to synthesize ammonia under ambient conditions without any catalysts but using electrically activated nitrogen species in the plasma. Therefore, the energy transfer process leading to nitrogen activation is key to the P/L reaction.

Aerosol acidity (pH) plays a critical role in atmospheric chemical processes, secondary aerosol formation, and urban air quality. Based on five years of hourly observations (2019-2023) in subtropical Dongguan, this study investigates the variability and thermodynamic regulation of aerosol pH, with a focus on aerosol liquid water content (ALWC), hydrogen ion (H) concentrations, and their interactions. Secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA), including NH, SO, NO and Cl, accounted for 92 ± 4 % of total water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs), with sufficient total NH (TNH) and non-volatile cations (NVCs) available to neutralize acidic species.

Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to ammonia holds great potential for sustainable ammonia synthesis at ambient conditions, where a single-atom catalyst has recently emerged as a prospective NRR catalyst candidate owing to its advantageous features such as maximal metal-utilization efficiency and low-coordinated single-atom metal sites. Nevertheless, owing to the uncontrolled coordination structures of the single-metal-atom sites in single-atom catalysts and the unregulated gas/ion migration in their surface reaction microenvironments, it still remains a formidable challenge to simultaneously improve the NRR selectivity and activity. In this work, we report a facile and general strategy to prepare a composite catalyst with protic ionic liquids (PIL) modified on conjugated coordination polymers that feature abundant single-atom metal sites with well-defined coordination structures, significantly outperforming its counterpart catalyst without PIL.

This study aims to isolate and optimize the production of L-asparaginase from fungal strains derived from Algerian Saharan plants, and evaluate the reduction of acrylamide formation in food products. L-asparaginase has frequently been used to treat childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of asparagine and glutamine into aspartic acid and ammonia.

The combination of chlorzoxazone and ibuprofen provides an effective therapeutic option for relieving pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis, sprains, ankylosing spondylitis, and pain after surgical procedures. Given its widespread use globally, it is crucial to develop a straightforward method for determination of this combination in real human plasma. This study focuses on the salting-out liquid-liquid extraction technique, an emerging approach for extracting drugs from biological matrices.
