Article Abstract

We present the results of our 13th annual horizon scan of issues likely to impact on biodiversity conservation. Issues are either novel within the biological conservation sector or could cause a substantial step-change in impact, either globally or regionally. Our global panel of 26 scientists and practitioners identified 15 issues that we believe to represent the highest priorities for tracking and action. Many of the issues we identified, including the impact of satellite megaconstellations and the use of long-distance wireless energy transfer, have both elements of threats and emerging opportunities. A recent state-sponsored application to commence deep-sea mining represents a significant step-change in impact. We hope that this horizon scan will increase research and policy attention on the highlighted issues.

Background And Objectives: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows evaluation of inter-eye differences (IEDs) in macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thicknesses to identify unilateral optic nerve involvement (UONI). UONI supports dissemination in space (DIS) as part of the 2024 revised McDonald diagnostic criteria for multiple sclerosis (MS). The OSCAR-IB quality control (QC) criteria identify suboptimal-quality OCT scans, which could potentially result in false-positive or false-negative UONI identification.

Introduction: Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with ligands for synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A) has emerged as a promising methodology for measuring synaptic density in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We investigated the relationship between SV2A PET and CSF synaptic protein changes of AD patients.

Method: Twenty-one participants with early AD and seven cognitively normal (CN) individuals underwent [C]UCB-J PET.

Introduction: This study investigated quality of life (QoL) and its role in treatment decision making among patients with anaplastic lymphoma kinase ()+ NSCLC.

Methods: Adult patients with self-reported + NSCLC residing in the United States from the Lung Cancer Registry from GO2 for Lung Cancer were included. Measures included a core patient survey derived from Quality of Life Questionnaire - Core 30 items (QLQ-C30) and QLQ - lung cancer module 29 items domains and an NSCLC module (ALK module).

Emerging threats to Antarctic conservation.

Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future, School of Biology and Environmental Science, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Antarctica, long considered an environmental sanctuary, now confronts accelerating, complex and inter-related conservation challenges. The vast size and remote location of the continent introduce substantial uncertainty in understanding and predicting these threats. Here, using strategic foresight techniques, we synthesized insights from a global horizon scan with 131 experts from 42 countries.

Cardiac fibrosis following myocardial infarction plays a critical role in the formation of scar tissue and contributes to ventricular arrhythmias, including ventricular tachycardia and sudden cardiac death. Current clinical diagnostics use electrical and structural markers, but lack precision due to low spatial resolution and absence of molecular information. In this paper, we employed line scan Raman microspectroscopy to classify sheep myocardial tissue into muscle, necrotic, granulated, and fibrotic tissue types, using collagen as a molecular biomarker.
