Article Abstract

Shape perception is crucial for object recognition. However, it remains unknown exactly how shape information is represented and used by the visual system. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the visual system represents object shape via a skeletal structure. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and representational similarity analysis (RSA), we found that a model of skeletal similarity explained significant unique variance in the response profiles of V3 and LO. Moreover, the skeletal model remained predictive in these regions even when controlling for other models of visual similarity that approximate low-to high-level visual features (i.e., Gabor-jet, GIST, HMAX, and AlexNet), and across different surface forms, a manipulation that altered object contours while preserving the underlying skeleton. Together, these findings shed light on shape processing in human vision, as well as the computational properties of V3 and LO. We discuss how these regions may support two putative roles of shape skeletons: namely, perceptual organization and object recognition.

This study investigated the learning strategy preferences of 11-month-old APP/PS1 double transgenic (Tg) mice, a well-established murine model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). APP/PS1 Tg and non-Tg control mice were serially trained in visual and hidden platform tasks in the Morris water maze. APP/PS1 Tg mice performed poorly in visual platform training compared with non-Tg mice but performed as well as non-Tg mice in hidden platform training.

In this study, we investigated the short- and long-term behavioral effects, as well as the long-term hippocampal effects, of chronic cocaine administration during adolescence, along with the potential neuroprotective role of insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) in male C57BL/6J mice. Prior researches on global-local processing have focused on hierarchical objects in the visual modality, while the real-world involves multisensory interactions. The present study investigated whether the simultaneous presentation of auditory stimuli influences the recognition of visually hierarchical objects. Licochalcone A (LCA), a natural flavonoid with potent anti-inflammatory properties, has shown promise as a neuroprotective agent. However, its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and exert central effects remains underexplored. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that LCA enhances cognitive function in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammatory mouse model and effectively penetrates the BBB.
