Human brain inherently exhibits latent mental processes which are likely to change rapidly over time. A framework that adopts a fuzzy inference system is proposed to model the dynamics of the human brain. The fuzzy inference system is used to encode real-world data to represent the salient features of the EEG signals. Then, an unsupervised clustering is conducted on the extracted feature space to identify the brain (external and covert) states that respond to different cognitive demands. To understand the human state change, a state transition diagram is introduced, allowing visualization of connectivity patterns between every pair of states. We compute the transition probability between every pair of states to represent the relationships between the states. This state transition diagram is named as the Fuzzy Covert State Transition Diagram (FCOSTD), which helps the understanding of human states and human performance. We then apply FCOSTD on distracted driving experiments. FCOSTD successfully discovers the external and covert states, faithfully reveals the transition of the brain between states, and the route of the state change when humans are distracted during a driving task. The experimental results demonstrate that different subjects have similar states and inter-state transition behaviour (establishing the consistency of the system) but different ways to allocate brain resources as different actions are being taken.

Background: To investigate covert motor processes, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies often use motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) as a proxy for inferring the state of motor representations. Typically, these studies test motor representations of actions that can be produced by the isolated contraction of one muscle, limiting both the number of recorded muscles and the complexity of tested actions. Furthermore, univariate analyses treat MEPs from different muscles as independent, overlooking potentially meaningful intermuscular relationships encoded in MEPs amplitude patterns at the single-trial level.

Human toxocariasis presents in several forms, including visceral larva migrans, ocular larva migrans, covert toxocariasis, and neurotoxocariasis. Although several studies suggest a potential link between toxocariasis and epilepsy, this link is still debated. Interdependent networks structurally influence each other so that the source network imposes hidden community structures into the target network. We propose a mathematical model so that when introducing an interlayer similarity function we generalize hierarchical clustering approaches for multilayer networks. The proposed methodology shows how a "source" network influences the "target" network via structural spillovers that are hidden and are not detectable by conventional community detection methods.

Background: The benefit-risk of statins in patients with lobar intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is under investigation in the StATins Use in intRacerebral hemorrhage patieNts (SATURN) trial. The relationship between statin use in ICH survivors, MRI markers of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), and outcomes such as recurrent ICH or major adverse cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events (MACCE) is unclear. The ancillary study, SATURN-MRI, intends to evaluate the interrelationship between statin use, the progression of MRI markers of CSVD, and cognitive and functional outcomes.
