Extracorporeal blood purification (EBP) is an emerging technique for reducing elevated levels of inflammatory mediators and/or endotoxins in critically ill patients with sepsis or other hyperinflammatory conditions. The oXiris filter combines endotoxin adsorption, cytokine adsorption, hemofiltration and anti-thrombosis, and an emerging body of evidence demonstrates its use in critical care patients with hyperinflammatory conditions and acute kidney injury (AKI). A group of Asia-Pacific experts convened to formulate consensus statements for the use of the oXiris filter based on a comprehensive review of publications.

One of the major hurdles in solid organ transplantation is graft rejection, which must be prevented with lifelong general immunosuppression. However, modern maintenance immunosuppression is accompanied by serious side effects, such as an increased risk of infection and malignancies. The search for alternative therapies specifically controlling allogeneic responses is fueling renewed interest in extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP).

Acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHDa) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) patients. While the first-line consensus treatment has been based on systemic corticosteroid therapy for many years, ruxolitinib has recently been approved and has become the standard second-line treatment. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of ruxolitinib remains limited to 40 % of cortico-resistant patients, raising the crucial question of selecting a third-line treatment.

Unlabelled: Bleeding and thromboembolic events (BTE) increase the mortality of COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The current analysis aimed to assess frequency and determinants of BTE according to their location and severity in a retrospective analysis of the German ECMO COVID-19 registry. Logistic regression was applied to identify factors influencing ICU survival as well as variables associated with risks of BTE.

Purpose: Infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) have varying degrees of pulmonary hypoplasia leading to cardiopulmonary derangements such as pulmonary hypertension. Extracorporeal membranous oxygenation (ECMO) can be necessary for survival in some patients. Our institution implemented a change in the NICU critical care management guideline for neonates with CDH in 2016.
