Objective: To evaluate in cardiac surgery patients the potential for alveolar recruitment at 3 perioperative time points-after intubation, after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), and on arrival in the intensive care unit (ICU)-by collecting pulmonary compliance values and calculating the recruitment-to-inflation (R/I) ratio.
Design: An interventional cohort single-center study conducted in a department of anaesthesiology and critical care and an ICU SETTING: This interventional study was conducted in 41 patients undergoing noncomplex cardiac surgery. Ventilatory mechanics, blood gas analysis, and hemodynamic parameters were measured before, during, and after a lung recruitment maneuver (LRM) (3 minutes at a positive end-expiratory pressure [PEEP] of 12 cmHO).

Background: During general anesthesia, the effect of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on lung injury depends on the potential for lung recruitment, which is variable among patients. The recruitment-to-inflation ratio (R/I) is measured from ventilator data during a single-breath PEEP-release maneuver, and has been proposed to assess recruitability without the need for additional equipment during acute respiratory distress syndrome. This study hypothesized that R/I reliably estimates the individual potential for lung recruitment during general anesthesia.

To analyze the factors influencing the time-dependent effect and prognosis of recruitment-to-inflation ratio (R/I) and elastic power in the prone position in patients with moderate-to-severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A prospective, observational cohort study was conducted. A total of 113 patients with moderate-to-severe ARDS were enrolled from December 2022 to October 2024 in the intensive care unit of the First Hospital of Jinzhou Medical University.

Acute intermittent hypercapnic hypoxia (IHH) evokes persistent increases in vascular sympathetic activity and blood pressure. Whether myocardial contractility is enhanced to contribute to this pressor response is unknown. We hypothesized that IHH would augment left ventricular systolic function.
