Article Abstract

[C]ER176 is a next generation PET radioligand for imaging 18 kDa translocator protein, a biomarker for neuroinflammation. The goal of this work was to investigate alternative strategies for the radiochemical synthesis, purification, and formulation of [C]ER176. An optimized tri-solvent high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) protocol is described to separate the hydro-de-chlorinated byproduct from [C]ER176. A newly implemented solid phase extraction work-up efficiently removed HPLC solvent while maintaining chemical purity and overall radiochemical yield and purity. This new HPLC purification and final formulation was completed within 40 min, providing 2.7 ± 0.5 GBq of [C]ER176 at end of synthesis with 1400 ± 300 GBq/μmol molar activity while meeting all specifications for radiopharmaceutical quality control tests for human research use.

Purpose: The monotonous lighting environment in extra-long tunnels often induces mind-wandering in drivers. To address this issue, this study explores effective strategies to optimize tunnel lighting environments by configuring various background colors and special lighting zones to enhance the alertness of young drivers and ensure driving safety.

Methods: A virtual driving simulator was utilized to carry out the experiment.

Frequent emergence of respiratory viruses with pandemic potential, like SARS-CoV-2 or influenza, underscores the need for broad-spectrum prophylaxis. Existing vaccines show reduced efficacy against newly emerged variants, and the ongoing risk of new outbreaks highlights the importance of alternative strategies to prevent infection and viral transmission. As respiratory viruses primarily enter through the nose, formulations targeting the nasal epithelium are attractive candidates to neutralize pathogens and thus prevent or minimize infection.

Individually foraging ants use egocentric views as a dominant navigation strategy for learning and retracing routes. Evidence suggests that route retracing can be achieved by algorithms which use views as 'visual compasses', where individuals choose the heading that leads to the most familiar visual scene when compared to route memories. However, such a mechanism does not naturally lead to route approach, and alternative strategies are required to enable convergence when off-route and for correcting on-route divergence.

Cicada rib-inspired tough films through nanoconfined crystallization for use in acoustic transducers.

Sci Adv

September 2025

State Key Laboratory of Bioinspired Interfacial Materials Science, School of Nano Science and Technology, Suzhou Institute for Advanced Research, University of Science and Technology of China, Suzhou 215123, P. R. China.

Acoustic transducers require films that demonstrate both toughness and fatigue resistance, presenting notable challenges when achieved through conventional nanoscale reinforcing strategies. Here, we found that the rib structure of a cicada's tymbal exhibits exceptional toughness and fatigue resistance, attributed to its unique architecture composed of alternating soft and stiff polymer layers. Inspired by this rib structure, we developed a robust artificial rib film (ARF) using a nanoconfined crystallization strategy that involves the deposition of soft polyethylene oxide and stiff phenol formaldehyde.

A compact cassette tape for DNA-based data storage.

Sci Adv

Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Smart Healthcare Engineering, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Advanced Biomaterials, Department of Biomedical Engineering. Southern University of Science and Technology, No. 1088 Xueyuan Rd., Nanshan District, Shenzhen, Guangdong 518055, P. R. China.

DNA with high storage density can serve as an alternative storage medium to respond to the global explosion of data growth and become a powerful personal storage memory if an integrated compact device can store and handle large-scale data. Here, we incorporate a DNA cassette tape with 5.5 × 10 addressable data partitions (addressing rate up to 1570 partitions per second), a DNA loading capacity of 28.
