Article Abstract

Selective inhibition of photosynthesis is a fundamental strategy to solve the global challenge caused by harmful cyanobacterial blooms. However, there is a lack of specificity of the currently used cyanocides, because most of them act on cyanobacteria by generating nontargeted oxidative stress. Here, for the first time, we find that the simplest β-diketone, acetylacetone, is a promising specific cyanocide, which acts on through targeted binding on bound iron species in the photosynthetic electron transport chain, rather than by oxidizing the components of the photosynthetic apparatus. The targeted binding approach outperforms the general oxidation mechanism in terms of specificity and eco-safety. Given the essential role of photosynthesis in both natural and artificial systems, this finding not only provides a unique solution for the selective control of cyanobacteria but also sheds new light on the ways to modulate photosynthesis.

Understanding the determinants of lifespan is a central objective in biology. Lifespan is shaped by dynamic, stage-specific changes in metabolism, energy allocation, and genome integrity. Heart rate serves as a physiological marker that reflects both life stage and metabolic state.

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are well known to give rise to a quantum confined structure of excitons. Because of this quantum confinement, new physics of hot exciton relaxation dynamics arises. Decades of work using transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy have yielded initial simple observations, such as estimates of the cooling rate from single pump photon energy experiments.

The chick embryo ventricular cardiomyocyte model provides students easy access to experiments involving fundamental features of cardiac cell physiology and pharmacology. Using standard physiology teaching laboratories and basic cell culture equipment, spontaneously beating colonies of electrically-connected cardiomyocytes can be obtained by the students themselves. Students learn, aseptic techniques and cell culture alongside experiments illustrating, at the simplest level of experimentation, how beating rate can be altered physiologically or pharmacologically.

The study of time-dependent within-person dynamics has gained popularity in recent years through the use of multilevel (latent) time-series models. However, due to the complexity of the models, model applications are usually limited with respect to the inclusion of time-varying moderating factors on the longitudinal within-person relations between variables. That is, in common applications of multilevel time-series models, the within-person dynamics of constructs over time are regarded as being insensitive to changes in other time-varying factors or changes in contexts.

Nitrous acid (HONO) is a vital pollutant gas and the nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs) produced by its reaction are the main components of aerosols. The reaction mechanisms and kinetics of HONO and the simplest aromatic Criegee intermediate (PhCHOO) are investigated by density functional theory and transition state theory in this study. The results demonstrate that cycloaddition of HONO and PhCHOO to form heteroozonide with the highest activation energy and smallest rate constant does not easily occur.
