A series of 4d-4f {RuIII2DyIII2} and {RuIII2GdIII2} 'butterfly' (rhombohedral) complexes have been synthesized and characterized and their magnetic properties investigated. Earlier, we have reported the first 4d/4f SMM - [RuIII2DyIII2(OMe)(OCPh)(mdea)(NO)] (1Dy) with a value of 10.7 cm. As the structural distortion around the Dy centres and the Ru⋯Dy exchange interactions are key to enhancing the anisotropy, in this work we have synthesised three more {RuDy} butterfly complexes where structural alteration around the Dy centres and alterations to the bridging groups are performed with an aim to improve the magnetic properties. The new complexes reported here are [RuDy(OMe)(OC(4-Me-Ph)(mdea)(MeOH)], 2Dy, [RuDy(OMe)(OC(2-Cl,4,5-F-Ph)(mdea)(NO)], 3Dy, and an acac derivative [RuDy(OMe)(acac)(NO)(edea)], 4Dy, where acac = acetylacetonate, edea = -ethyldiethanolamine dianion. Complex 2Dy describes alteration in the Dy centers, while complexes 3Dy and 4Dy are aimed to alter the Ru⋯Dy exchange pathways. To ascertain the 4d-4f exchange, the Gd-analogues of 1Dy and 4Dy were synthesised [RuGd(OMe)(OCPh)(mdea)(NO)], 1Gd, [RuGd(OMe)(acac)(NO)(edea)], 4Gd. Both ac and dc susceptibility studies were performed on all these complexes, and out-of-phase signals were observed for 3Dy in zero-field while 2Dy and 4Dy show out-of-phase signals in the presence of an applied field. Complex 3Dy reveals a barrier height of 45 K. To understand the difference in the magnetic dynamic behavior compared to our earlier reported {RuIII2DyIII2} analogue, detailed theoretical calculations based on CASSCF/RASSI-SO calculations have been performed. Calculations reveal that the value varies from -1.8 cm (4Dy) to -2.4 cm (3Dy). These values are also affirmed by DFT calculations performed on the corresponding Gd analogues. The origin of the largest barrier and observation of slow magnetic relaxation in 3Dy is routed back to the stronger single-ion anisotropy and stronger exchange which quenches the QTM effects more efficiently. This study thus paves the way forward to tune local structure around the Ln center and the exchange pathway to enhance the SMM characteristics in other {3d-4f}/{4d-4f} SMMs.

Ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) based on ferroelectric switching and quantum tunneling effects with thickness down to a few unit cells have been explored for applications of two-dimensional (2D) electronic devices in data storage and neural networks. As a key performance indicator, the enhanced tunneling electrosistance (TER) ratio provides a broader dynamic range for precise modulation of synaptic weights, improving the stability and accuracy of neural networks. Herein, we report an observation of pronounced enhancement in the TER ratio by over 4 orders of magnitude through the fabrication of large-scale heterostructures combining bismuth ferrite with two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper oxide BiFeO.

Based on the first-principles calculations, we theoretically investigate the electronic structure, interfacial and optical properties of the tellurene/ZnSe (namely α- and γ-Te/ZnSe) van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs). In the most stable stacking pattern, the α-Te/ZnSe vdWH exhibits an indirect band gap of 0.41 eV and forms a type-I band alignment, while the γ-Te/ZnSe vdWH possesses a p-type Schottky contact with a favorable Schottky barrier height of 0.

We develop the theory justifying the application of the density-based basis-set correction (DBBSC) method to double-hybrid approximations in order to accelerate their basis convergence. We show that, for the one-parameter double hybrids based on the adiabatic connection, the exact dependence of the basis-set correction functional on the coupling-constant parameter λ involves a uniform coordinate scaling by a factor 1/λ of the density and of the basis functions.
