Article Abstract

Unlike CT angiography, which requires the use of contrast medium, MR angiography (MRA) can be performed without the use of contrast agents. This subfield of MRA is referred to as non-contrast-enhanced MRA (NC-MRA). While NC-MRA can be performed in many patients, it is especially useful in the imaging of pediatric and pregnant patients, as well as in patients with renal impairment. NC-MRA can also provide unique functional and hemodynamic information that is not obtainable with CT angiography or contrast-enhanced MRA. This module gives an overview of the predominant NC-MRA techniques that are currently available on modern clinical MRI systems, while also discussing some new and emerging topics in the field. This module is the second in a series created on behalf of the Society for Magnetic Resonance Angiography (SMRA), a group of researchers and clinicians who are passionate about the benefits of MRA but understand its challenges. Case report: Cervical artery dissection in a patient with Turner Syndrome.

The authors describe a case of vertebral artery dissection in a patient with Turner Syndrome presenting to a university student health center. Cervical artery dissection (CeAD) is the most common cause of stroke in young adults and should be considered in patients with underlying risk factors. It usually presents with local symptoms caused by compression of adjacent nerves and their feeding vessels, as well as ischemia and hemorrhagic events.

Objectives: The authors hypothesized that the origin of the right coronary artery (RCA) is a direct continuation of the major aortic arch branches (MAAB) takeoff plane, which may have implications for brachiocephalic interventions and next generation transcatheter aortic valve intervention (TAVI) embolic protection devices (EPDs).

Methods: In this single-center, retrospective, cross-sectional study, the authors analyzed computed tomographic angiography (CTA) images from 92 patients undergoing TAVI evaluation to determine the spatial relationship between the origin of the RCA and the MAAB takeoff plane. Patients with prior cardiothoracic or aortic interventions and those with anomalous RCA origin were excluded.

Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) MRI is a contrast-agent-free microvascular imaging method finding increasing use in biomedicine. However, there is uncertainty in the ability of IVIM-MRI to quantify tissue microvasculature given MRI's limited spatial resolution (mm scale).
