Using scRNA-seq coupled with computational approaches, we studied transcriptional changes in cell states of sea urchin embryos during development to the larval stage. Eighteen closely spaced time points were taken during the first 24 h of development of Lytechinus variegatus (Lv). Developmental trajectories were constructed using Waddington-OT, a computational approach to 'stitch' together developmental time points. Skeletogenic and primordial germ cell trajectories diverged early in cleavage. Ectodermal progenitors were distinct from other lineages by the 6th cleavage, although a small percentage of ectoderm cells briefly co-expressed endoderm markers that indicated an early ecto-endoderm cell state, likely in cells originating from the equatorial region of the egg. Endomesoderm cells also originated at the 6th cleavage and this state persisted for more than two cleavages, then diverged into distinct endoderm and mesoderm fates asynchronously, with some cells retaining an intermediate specification status until gastrulation. Seventy-nine out of 80 genes (99%) examined, and included in published developmental gene regulatory networks (dGRNs), are present in the Lv-scRNA-seq dataset and are expressed in the correct lineages in which the dGRN circuits operate.

Environmental stressors other than overfishing and the collapse of native stocks are impacting sea urchin populations for harvesting and production. Blooms of the benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata can negatively impact invertebrates, leading to mass mortalities and local extinctions of sea urchins.

Amidst the decline of coral reef ecosystems, restoration practitioners are expanding their focus to incorporate key reef community components, such as grazers, to improve site conditions and the long-term survivorship of restored corals. We investigated the use of hatchery-propagated Diadema antillarum as well as two other locally abundant urchin species, Lytechinus variegatus and Echinometra viridis, for coral-urchin tandem reef restoration in Florida, USA. Urchins were deployed onto reef plots at various stages of Acropora cervicornis restoration and provided artificial cement refuges to evaluate retention and herbivory rates.

These highly persistent molecules are known as "forever chemicals" since they neither degrade environmentally nor break down enzymatically within biological systems. PFAS compounds readily contaminate water sources, and as a result, certain PFAS molecules have bioaccumulated in exposed species including humans.

In this study, we report the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of (Lamarck, 1816), which is the first complete mitochondrial genome of this genus . The mitochondrial genome is 15,711 bp in length and includes 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and one non-coding control region (D-loop). Phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial genomes suggested a potential close relationship between the genus and the genus .
