Article Abstract

Background: The high demand for adequate material for the gold standard reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR)-based diagnosis imposed by the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, combined with the inherent contamination risks for healthcare workers during nasopharyngeal swab (NP) sample collection and the discomfort it causes patients, brought the need to identify alternative specimens suitable for the diagnosis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Objectives: The aim of this work was to compare saliva and gingival fluid swabs to NP swabs as specimens for RT-qPCR-based SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis.

Methods: We compared gingival fluid swabs (n = 158) and saliva (n = 207) to the rayon-tipped NP swabs obtained from mild-symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects as specimens for RT-qPCR for SARS-CoV-2 detection.

Findings: When compared to NP swabs, gingival fluid swabs had a concordance rate of 15.4% among positive samples, zero among inconclusive, and 100% among negative ones. For saliva samples, the concordance rate was 67.6% among positive samples, 42.9% among inconclusive, and 96.8% among negative ones. However, the concordance rate between saliva and NP swabs was higher (96.9%) within samples with lower cycle threshold (Ct) values (Ct > 10 ≤ 25).

Main Conclusions: Our data suggests that whereas gingival fluid swabs are not substitutes for NP swabs, saliva might be considered whenever NP swabs are not available or recommended.

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the inflammatory responses of two cordless gingival retraction systems by assessing the levels of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). The objectives were to measure IL-1β and TNF-α levels before and after retraction using kaolin-based and polyvinyl acetate-based cordless gingival retraction materials at baseline, 1 h, and 24 h, and to compare the inflammatory profiles of these materials.

Materials And Methods: This in-vivo comparative study used a split-mouth design, with each of the 10 enrolled patients serving as their own control by receiving both kaolin-based paste (Traxodent®, Premier Dental Products, Plymouth Meeting, PA, USA) and polyvinyl acetate-based strip (Merocel®, Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) on different endodontically treated teeth requiring full-coverage crowns, thereby minimizing interindividual variability.

Department of Preventive Dentistry and Dental Public Health, School of Dentistry, Aichi Gakuin University, Nagoya, Japan. Electronic address:

Introduction And Aims: This study compared periodontal status and oral bacteria between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and healthy controls (HCs), and examined the influence of oral bacteria on the association between periodontitis and RA.

Methods: In total, 85 patients with RA and 119 HCs were enrolled. The oral microflora DNA test was used to quantify the oral bacterial species detected in gingival crevicular fluid.

Introduction: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition in which oxidative stress plays a major role in its pathogenesis. The redox balance in the body acts as a defense system to counter this stress. The Peroxiredoxin (Prx)- Sulfiredoxin (Srx) antioxidant system is one such mechanism, found to be active in many systemic inflammatory diseases, including periodontitis.

Introduction: Micro-osteoperforation (MOP) is a minimally invasive technique aimed at accelerating orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) by stimulating localised bone remodelling. However, its impact on root resorption, alveolar bone levels, and inflammatory mediators such as interleukin-4 (IL-4) requires further investigation. This study assessed root resorption, alveolar bone changes, canine angulation, rate of retraction, and IL-4 expression associated with MOP-assisted canine retraction.
