Article Abstract

Aim: To analyze uroflowmetry as a predictor of the outcome of treatment with parasacral transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in patients with pure overactive bladder.

Methods: Thirty-eight patients of 5-16 years of age were included in this prospective cohort study. All the patients had been seen at a referral clinic between 2006 and 2015. All had a diagnosis of pure overactive bladder and were treated with TENS. Parameters established at pretreatment uroflowmetry were evaluated, with patients then being separated into two groups based on their visual analogue scale (VAS) score immediately following TENS. The variables analyzed at uroflowmetry were: maximum flow rate, curve pattern (bell or tower-shaped), time until maximum flow and voided volume.

Results: The mean age of the children evaluated was 7.26 years (SD: 2.62) (95%CI: 6.4-8.13) and 73.7% were girls. No association was found between maximum flow rate, curve pattern (bell or tower-shaped) or voided volume and the complete resolution of symptoms following treatment. Nevertheless, a shorter time until maximum flow was associated with a greater likelihood of treatment failure.

Conclusion: The time until maximum flow rate before treatment is a potential predictor of the outcome of TENS treatment.

Indocyanine green (ICG) is a well-established near-infrared dye which has been used clinically for several decades. Recently, it has been utilised for fluorescence-guided surgery in a range of solid cancer types, including sarcoma, with the aim of reducing the positive margin rate. The increased uptake and retention of ICG within tumours, compared with normal tissue, gives surgeons a visual reference to aid resection when viewed through a near-infrared camera.

Background: Nodular hidradenoma (NH) is a rare benign adnexal tumor originating from sweat glands, often misdiagnosed due to nonspecific clinical manifestations. Ultrasonography (US) plays a critical role in the diagnosis of skin tumors, yet systematic descriptions of its sonographic features remain limited.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the very-high-frequency (VHF) characteristics of eccrine nodular hidradenoma (ENH) and establish key imaging criteria to differentiate it from other cutaneous/subcutaneous lesions.

Background: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of daily consumption of white potatoes compared with white rice on cardiometabolic health in individuals with type-2 diabetes (T2D).

Objective: To determine the effects of white potato consumption compared to white rice (a commonly consumed refined grain) on indices of glycemic control and cardiovascular health in individuals with overweight or obesity and T2D.

Methods: In this randomized crossover study, comparative control trial, 24 adults with T2D [45-80 y, body mass index (kg/m) 25-40] consumed baked white potatoes (100 g) or calorie-matched white rice (75 g) daily for 12 wk, separated by a 2-wk washout, with assessments of glycemic control, lipids, inflammation, blood pressure, endothelial function, and body composition at baseline (only 1 baseline visit included as a covariate in statistical analyses), 6 wk, and 12 wk.

The sustainable synthesis of bio-based monomers from renewable biomass intermediates is a central goal in green chemistry and biorefinery innovation. This study introduces a synergistic catalytic-enzymatic strategy for the efficient and eco-friendly oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a key monomer for next-generation biodegradable plastics. The catalytic phase employed non-noble metal catalysts, MnO and Co-Mn supported on activated carbon (Co-Mn/AC), under mild batch reaction conditions at 90 °C.

Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic respiratory illnesses, significantly impacting patients through shortness of breath and even death. Acute exacerbations are usually controlled with a short-acting beta agonist, such as an albuterol inhaler, as well as long-acting agents to prevent the occurrence of exacerbations and status asthmaticus. Status asthmaticus is an emergent episode of asthma that is refractory to standard treatment.
